Why did Hitler never order the use of chemical weapons, especially against the Soviets?

I have always thought it was because of his exposure to it during WWI, but considering the man actively gassed civilians without a qualm and seemed to hate communism almost as much as Judaism, it’s always baffled me that he never ordered the use of chemical weapons, especially in or around Stalingrad or as the Soviets approached Berlin. Why?

Were there male Concubines in ancient Scandinavia? How were they treated?

In pre-Christian Scandinavia it was considered Ergi (Womanly) for a freeman to have sex with another freeman; Wealthy norse men would keep concubines, which were women he would have sex with who weren't his wife, they were almost always of the slave cast.

Slaves are not freemen (obviously) so if a Scandinavian nobleman were to take a male slave as his Concubine, how would that be viewed by their society?

In some dictionaries, the word Byzantine also can mean unscrupulous and cutthroats methods of operating (especially in politics). Was the Byzantine Empire's political system that cutthroat in comparison to rest of the Christian or Muslim worlds, during the middle ages ?

How were European knights noblemen and elite soldiers at the same time?

Hi,

This question is, I guess, related to earlier (and later) ages and civilizations as well because as I understand it to have good weapons and good armor you had to be rich and powerful pretty much anywhere.

I just can't really picture it, how come knights were considered the elite and most powerful units when they were rich nobleman at the same time. How is it that all knights just happened to be noblemen and somehow the best fighters at the same time? I would imagine a nobleman living a sheltered life compared to his servants (or soldiers) could not be an effective fighter because they were not enthusiastic about risking their sweet life whereas someone of lower status could see military service as a career if you will.

In films they are usually some sort of super soldiers who fight better than the hardened lowly grunts.

Also knights were landowners, so how could they make up a sufficiently large military force on their own at all?

I apologize also for this broad question that probably covers a lot of history and different contexts. :)

Thank you!

How long was it before ordinary Nazi supporters rejected the ideology during denazification? Did any of them feel remorse? Were they at all looked down upon by other Germans or were they forgiven?

So, how exactly does one become emperor?

I always assumed that, at least in the Catholic world (which my question is mainly referring to), the Pope had to grant one that title, as he did with Napoleon I (even though he didn't seem to have much choice in that case). However, I find myself confused by various instances of monarchs proclaiming themselves emperor seemingly unilaterally. The Austrian emperor Francis I and the Brazilian emperor Pedro I come to mind. Why were they able to simply claim that title? And, if it was that easy, why didn't every monarch in the Christian world upgrade their title of king to that of emperor, considering that the latter is more prestigious?

Apologies if this has been asked before and thanks in advance!

Why would Richard III kill the Princes in the Tower if he made them illegitimate?

Obviously, this is a big debate.

But I don't understand why, if they were illegitimate, why Richard would kill them. It seems more likely that when Henry VII re-legitimised Edward IV's children, he needed to kill the Princes.

But still the majority think Richard killed them. I don't see a major reason to kill them, whereas Henry had a reason.

What should a researcher do to make the most of their visit to an archive or collection of a museum, local historical society, or local libraries? How should one prepare for a visit and what are best practices for working with curators and archivists?

Help! I've been mistaken for a real historian instead of a hobbyist.

Okay, not really - but I am heading to a museum's archives to look for primary source documents. I cold-called the museum, spoke to the front desk and they referred me to a curator. She was incredibly helpful and we discussed the materials I was hoping to find. After narrowing down the specific collection I was hoping to view, we've scheduled a time for me to come in after the holidays.

It's been years since I had to do a research paper for school, but I've recently started a passion project researching some local history. While I'm blessed to have a fabulous local library system and I'm familiar with ILL and e-catalogs for other resources, I have never used this kind of resource before.

How can I make the best use of my visit to the museum? What are some do's and don'ts of visiting archives? Are eight different colored highlighters too many or not enough?

How do I determine whether a primary source is useful or merely interesting?

When did people stop being able to move freely between their homeland and colonies? E.g. Between England and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

As a Canadian I'd like to know when it was decided I should be stuck in this frozen tundra with no way out! For colonies like America it's obvious when (1776 I take it?), but how about for colonies that didn't have such black and white distinction between colony and independent nation?

In 1900 could a Canadian have freely moved to Australia or England without visa sponsorship through a job on a very restrictive list of acceptable professions? If I wanted to go enjoy the nice weather down under could I just buy a boat ticket one day and go?

I'm seeing more and more things say the Pacific Islanders had contact with South America. Genetic studies, crops, stuff like that. To what degree is this certain/plausible/fringe?

Did they have contact with North America?

When did the US Republicans and Democrats switch stances on issues? Was it abrupt or gradual?

At one point in time, the American conservative party was named the Democrats, and the progressive party was named the Republicans. It was, in fact, the Democrats who fought for slavery in their civil war over slavery in the 1800s.

When did the switch occur where the democrats became the progressive party? Was it a gradual change over a decade, or some abrupt change? What was the reason for basically a switch of names?

I heard Saddam Hussein hated Kuwait. Why is this?

I am trying to make sense of Middle Eastern Politics in the 90s as context to today, and I was trying to find any information on why Saddam Hussein disliked Kuwait, as I read that this was the case somewhere. What were Iraq-Kuwaiti relations like in the lead to invasion?

Were Baby Boomers viewed by older generations the way Millennials are today?

Millennials are stereotyped as being entitled, impatient, overly sensitive, progressive, technology-obsessed and socially/environmentally conscious.

Relative to the decades before, Baby Boomers (generally) grew up in a more prosperous time with many technological advancements and social / environmental progression.

How was this new generation viewed in the late 50s to early 70s from the older folks at the time?

Ming Dynasty inconsistencies

Lately, I have been looking through the Renaissance era and in particular the Ming Dynasty. From the research I have been doing, there have been some inconsistencies. A lot of the sources I visited mentioned that the Haijin (sea ban) was not enforced in practice yet some sources also say that it did happen and it did restrict the Ming Dynastys trade leading to major smuggling.

So what actually did happen?

How did the Columbian Exchange occur in Asia and or Africa?

Hello!

So I’ve been having this thought mentioned above as of late as there are a reasonable amount of asian dishes that incorporate new world vegetables and fruits. Not nearly as much as it does in European cuisine but besides that, how did the Columbian Exchange occur in Asia and or Africa? Were there similar reactions to the new commodities there as there were in Europe? Did they understand that the Americas were a newly discovered continent and knew these trade goods originated there?
