I've only heard of the two states in relation to Rome. What were their relationship like with each other?

To be blunt I believe Joseph Smith to be a 19th century conman that created this cult out of self interests. Because of this, I am wondering where he got his wild ideas from and in this case I am wondering if he had a run in with polygamy somewhere in the northeast. Even if he didn't I am wondering if polygamy existed in any form in that particular area?

My only real exposure to Latin American history was a 3-week 10,000-ft overview back in high school, over a decade ago. Recently I've been watching Chilean news channels and tv shows with a friend, and I'm becoming very curious about the history of the country. Before I start binge-ordering every book I can find with "Chile" in the title, I thought I'd see whether AskHistorians has any solid recommendations for someone with no prior knowledge of the subject area. English or Spanish books are fine. Thanks!

The Visigoths were Christian of course, then came the Umayyads conquering them as Muslims, but did the people stay Christian? Were there major attempts to convert the local populace or did they impose some sort of religious tax?

In the past, all or most of the power was held in the hands of the monarchy and the hereditary nobility. Nowadays, however, places that still have a monarchy are largely governed by an assembly of elected officials who do not necessarily come from noble stock. What caused the shift from the former to the latter? What sort of societal pressures existed that caused the nobility to willingly cede the powers of governance?

This picture of a "Street gang from 1916" is on the frontpage of the pics subreddit right now. They're definitely scruffy but it seems they do care about "gentlemanly" appearance to an extent. Some are in ties, some have buttoned overcoats and laced boots.
This made me think, all the gang pictures I've seen from the early and mid 1900s show people who are kind of well dressed. Like the Mafia has a reputation of dressing up in buttoned shirts, suits, etc, even while conducting their dirty business.
Transitioning to the 1980s and 1990s, the stereotypical image of a gang seems to have changed to someone who's dressed sloppier. Like jeans, baggy t-shirts, etc. (Not trying to be racist: I'm referring to gangs of all ethnicities.)
Is this confirmation bias on my part or did American gangs in the early 1900s emphasize good looks and respectable clothing? Why would they care about that?

I am reading a book that mentioned the post war leader of fhe East German communist party was a socialist prior to becoming a Marxist. It's hard for me to imagine a socialist who wasn't influenced by Marx because he is so deeply intermeshed with modern socialist thinking (at least from my outsider perspective---I am not a socialisy myself just interested in the history of it).
What distinguished Marxist socialism from non-marxist socialism or pre-marxist socialism?

I've been reading some of the Richard Sharpe books, and the author sometimes mentions that the French cavalry horses in particular are in kind of bad shape. In some books he goes so far as to say that the British soldiers literally smell the open sores of the French horses from across the battlefield. Any truth to this? Is this particular to the French and this time period, or is this a constant problem with war horses throughout history?

The book is Foner's 'Give Me Liberty!'
It states that there was an organized tribal Gov't that taxed trade and movement of white settlers in the area they controlled, as well as collecting tribute from other natives.
How organized were they really, and how was it governed?
My book says they collapsed/were dismantled pretty quickly during the indian wars, but wikipedia doesn't say anything about a centralized entity to collapse in the first place. I'm thinking he might have been speaking semi-figuratively about the empire bit, just referring to general commanche practices, but it didn't seem like it to me.
Edit: Apologies, I got the area wrong. It looks more like a portion of texas and a lot of land around colorado.
