My question is more related to when did the Roman aqueducts transitioned from being a revolutionary infrastructure tool, to being left idle and eventually becoming ruins? Did people of later civilizations, in the Dark Ages, Medieval ages and Renaissance have any idea what the roman aqueducts were, or did they just assume the aqueducts were just some other ruin of the long gone Roman Empire?

What was the demographic make up of Carthage at its height? Was it a racially mixed city of Phoenicians, Berbers and other African tribes. Did Carthage still maintain any ties to Tyre? Was Hannibal and the Barca family considered of Phoenician decent or were they a mix of multiple ethnicities?

I love reading about the history of different clanships and came accross the most popular of all the Irish clan's, the Ui Nialls. Having been an ancient house for centuries and centuries developing many intertwined branches of other houses and cadet branches, what was their relationship with the main Ui Nialls? In the event of a war would the cadent branches be expected to support the Ui Nialls? Also according to tanistry laws in Ireland at the times of the Ui Nialls would the cadet branches be able to vote on the new Ui Niall clan chief?

To what extent did the Portuguese actually colonize Angola, Mozambique and other African possessions during the 15 and 1600s. I'm under the impression they didn't really venture past the coast in that timeframe, but would their presence have extended past soldiers, sailors and merchants to women and children in communities.

Also and this one might be even harder to answer. When first contact was made with sub Saharan African communities how would Portuguese (or other nations) communicate initially? Was there any common languages spoken like Arabic?

Bare with me, this takes a bit of explaining.

I had an encounter with my uncle, who was in the US Navy, that I'd like to confirm some details about. He's always been very discrete about his time in the service, no one in our very large and very close family had heard anything about this before, so he's not one to spin stories.

He was really drunk, which is an every day thing, and while usually he mumbles incoherently, while he was arguing with another family member about the recent Syrian refugee crisis, he started going off on something that I could actually understand. It got to be about the idea that Syrians ought to stay and fight, and he started talking about his own service.

Everybody else went quiet at that point, because his military service a bit of a family mystery, and no one has really gotten many details.

He said he'd done things for his country that some people might have lost sleep over, but he never did. Then he kept repeating, we called them, but they didn't reply, we called them but they didn't reply. He didn't say call, but some kind of radio terminology I don't remember. He repeated this a lot. Over the course of the conversation he mentioned his boat was in the Persian gulf and that they fired, and he didn't regret his service. Also something about seeing them on radar.

It was very jumbled, but I'd read the Wikipedia page for the downing recently, so after a while, I made the connection.

I understand the source isn't the best, but he's not one for making up stories. If anyone could direct me to books or online sources to check out, I'd be very appreciative. I want to know more, not just to confirm, but since he was involved and he's my uncle and godfather, I guess I just want to understand the circumstances. Feel free to PM me.

I'm trying to design a war game, and a few questions have arisen.

For the squad/platoon/company/battalion levels, how much actual space (not sure of the correct term) did they occupy on an average WWII battlefield? Did other units not under the same command (such as an armored brigade or division) operate in an overlapping area? Or did they pretty much have their own length of the front?

Is this just simply because land is so abundant on the continent, the risk/reward isn't worth it?

Thanks for the replies, id like to add that most answers have focused on the legality of a wanted dead or alive. It has been determined that it does not amount to state scantioned murder, rather the authority to bring someone in by any means necessary to stand trial (or continued jail time if they were an escapee). The bounty would be paid if they were dead already or if they were killed in the process of resisting arrest.
Whilst i accept that modern bounties still exist, as shown by FBI most wanted lists these bounties offer a reward for information leading to an arrest and as such i dont consider them to be wanted dead or alive bounties. Thanks to the mod team, this has been an unusual question in the way it blew up and required a lot of moderation to keep it on topic.

Certain parts of history I know about from either high school or personal interest but there's so many other areas and times that I know nothing about. What would be a good text to start with on these periods?

So far I have only found one name attached to it, Fred Rose. Can someone provide information on how extensive this operation was?
