Did Irish peasants become reliant on the potato prior to British rule, or was it mainly post 1800 that this was the case? Did any policies passed by Britain help or hinder the Irish during the famines?

About a month ago there was a question about how long after the collapse of the Roman Empire did people identify as Roman, which was interesting.
Well it made me wonder what actually happened to the Romans and Roman culture after the collapse. Were they enslaved, murdered or eradicated, did they assimilate. Was there any progression of Roman language and culture or did it just completely vanish?

So I'm guessing 'Islam' didn't really exist before Muhammad, if that's so what was the religion of the region like before Muhammad. I know it was similar to Judaism and Christianity, in what ways?
Also a side question, do we have any idea when a split or divergence between Judaism and 'Islam' happened?

I just read Tom Holland's book "Rubicon", about the rise and fall of the roman republic, and as a layman i enjoyed the book. However, it ends around the death of the republic and the rise of Augustus Caesar, and i've always been incredibly fascinated by the immense individual power and debauchery of the roman emperors. So i just wondered if anyone could recommend something about the period AFTER the republic?

To clarify my question, I’d also like to quote President Truman’s speech (1947) – ‘The seeds of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want. They spread and grow in the evil soil of poverty and strife. They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a better life has died.’
Why would people prefer totalitarianism over freedom in these conditions? I'm not a historian, and I can guess, but I'd rather hear an informed answer. Thank you in advance!

Nearly all people I've asked have told me that Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs have existed as distinct ethnic groups prior to the Ottoman Empire's conquest of the Balkans and that Bosniaks were the result South Slavs that accepted Islam and wanted to be considered distinct from Serbs and Croats. And that at some time when they would do their ethnic census, Bosniaks were originally called "Muslim" before the term "Bosniak" started being used. Here is an example of what I'm talking about.
There is one problem with that theory though. prior to the Ottoman conquest of Europe, Bosniak empires did exist - two of which are the 'Banate of Bosnia' and the 'Kingdom of Bosnia'. So this kind of shows that Bosniaks existed as a people similar to the Croats, Serbs, etc. did prior to accepting Islam and are not just a new ethnicity born out of Ottoman conquest.
Also, if you could please talk about the origins of Bosniaks cause I think that would really simplify things.

When Marx was alive he was in the middle of an age where there were colonizing Africa and Asia, most people thought of them as stick wielding tribals. Marx was a very modern thinker and I want to know what he though.I don't want people think he would, if possible I would like a quote or a citation with a link if possible.
