Why didn't Australia practice African slavery?

Why wasn't slavery more widespread in Australia, like how it was in the American colonies? Why didn't the African slave trade extend over to Australia, giving Australia a large black population?

Is it possible to consider Spanish colonies "kingdoms"?

Recently, a peruvian historian claimed Peru couldn't be considered a colony because it was a kingdom under the Spanish Empire. You can check this link if you understand spanish and want to read a summary of his ideas. Basically, he says that:

  • Peru wasn't a colony, it was a kingdom under Spanish Empire, with the condition of vice-kingdom or viceroyalty.
  • It was originally considered a governorate generically called "Kingdom of Peru"
  • The Viceroyalty of Peru comprised more than half the full spanish territory and was of the utmost economical importance because of the presence of mines like Hualgayoc, Potosi or Huancavelica.
  • Peru can't be considered a colony because there wasn't a plan of systematic extermination like in North America.
  • Spanish conquerors integrated the natives to his social, politic and religious system through evangelization and hispanicization (hispanization? not sure which is the adequate term).
  • Religion took a very important part on this stage of history. The American Conquista was seen as a crusade, as a proyection of the Spanish Reconquista and that's why christianisation was so strong.

I, personally, don't agree with this point of view and don't think those reasons are enough to call the Viceroyalty of Perú a Kingdom. However, I ask you if it's possible to think of spanish viceroyalties as kingdoms because of these reasons or other that aren't mentioned.

Why did ensign placement in 18th and 19th century warships change?

By looking at paintings of 'old' naval battles I noticed that there is a change in where the ensign is flown that happens right before the Napoleonic Wars. If you look at this painting, you see that the ships fly their ensigns from the flagstaff but if you look at this painting, you see that the ensigns are now flying from the spanker. Why did this change occur?

What was the Roman Republic/Empire's take on the monotheism of Judaism?

Given the Romans' propensity for absorbing local deities into their pantheon, what did they make of Judaism's whole "one true God" business? Did they attempt to assimilate YHWH at first? Are there aspects of Roman religion post-contact that indicate an assimilated version of YHWH? Did they just put it aside as some strange Jewish superstition?

I'm particularly interested in the first century B.C.E., but opinions later/earlier would be interesting as well, especially if there were significant shifts (not counting the Empire's shift to Christianity).

I checked the FAQ, but most of the questions relating to Romans and religion seem to relate to their own religion.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

My friend found this plate in his backyard, what is it? "Made in Persia 1477"

We were wondering what this plate was used for (whether it be for food for a feast, decorative piece, etc) and if the inscription had any importance to it. Here are the photos.

EDIT: Found in junk that was left behind after the house was bought. We are in Northern Illinois.

EDIT 2: Grammar.

What is the current state of historiography surrounding LGBT culture amongst black Americans in the early 20th century? Where should I begin for an overview?

I've been going through the university libraries and struggling to find anything. This isn't for a project, just a bit of curiosity because the topic has not been addressed on any of the American history survey courses I've taken. Any pointers for where to start looking for primary sources would be really appreciated.
