You hear this all the time, that Germany had to invade the west and east when it did because Hitler's economic policies were based on more resources than Germany actually had.
I figure this question has two parts. First, was the economy really on the edge of collapse in 1940-1941? And second, was war seen as a viable method to fix this?

Back in the age of sail it wasn't uncommon for naval action to turn to boarding an enemy ship if I recall right, so did sailors for any of the world's navies (British, Spanish, Dutch, French, etc) receive any formal training in how to fight in close quarters? Or were seamen just handed a cutlass or an axe and told to have at it?

I don't remember quite exactly where in David Lloyd George's memoirs I saw this, but given that Curie had little experience with commanding so many divisions at the same time, I'm skeptical this is true. He also mentioned that he would have promoted the Australian General John Monash in the same vein. Is there any truth in that statement as well?

I'm asking because the bases for western society is said to come from places like Greece, and Rome etc, even looking at the Third Reich, many things, from their symbols and architecture has obvious creco-roman inspiration. But the Mediterranean people weren't Nordic, and based on history it seems that the southern Mediterraneans could have challenged their Nordic supremacy ideology, Western civilization had it's foundations in Greece, and Greece was the light of Europe during antiquity, The Roman empire was the dominate empire for thousands of years, and when it split you had the eastern roman empire(byzantine) which was the light of European civilization during the "Dark ages" You had the enlightenment of the Italian renaissance with Greek byzantine scholars that rekindled the so called "European spirit" Many of the Great European artists, poets, philosophers come from Italy and Greece, Leonardo da vinci, Aristotle, Plato, the creators of Cyrillic script by the Greek brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius, Architects such as Isidore of Miletus, Homer, Marco polo, Micheal Angelo. Arguably the most important, thinkers, philosophers, artists, architects of the western world come/have come exclusively from Southern Europe, not even mentioning the vast amounts of Spanish, Portuguese explorers etc.
So did the Nazi's see this as threatening to there racial myths? did they try to explain these things away with pseudo history and science, perhaps they tried to have their people believe all those civilizations were in fact Germanic etc?
Is there any information on this? Thank you, and sorry for my English, not my first language

I just finished reading Forgotten Ally by Rana Mitter and I found it fascinating. Now I really want to read a good history book about the Chinese Civil War, and possibly some good books about the Qing Dynasty (any period).
Thanks guys.

I'd be very interested in finding out what political positions historians generally hold, or if there is any generally held position. Have there been any surveys done in this area?

I'm curious if there was a single sword fighting technique that all knights used, and how much it varied from person to person. Did knights have their own 'style' within that technique? Were there multiple overarching techniques or 'schools of sword fighting'?
Were there any knights that used an especially unique or unorthodox style and what lead to this?
Edit: *fighting in the title

I hear a lot about how the white man fucked everything up in Africa, and I'm sure there's little disputing that he did. But are the issues of today direct consequences of that?

How far would a roman coin travel?
Where would the goods brought into the empire come from?
Where would goods be sent out to?
What sort of goods could survive travelling such distances, and how would they be conveyed over such vast distances?

Question might be hard to understand but I've been watching a couple documentaries on Netflix, and most seem like pure speculation. I heard the Rosetta Stone helped a lot when that was " decoded " but I just can't help to think, what if we are COMPLETELY wrong? How can we be so sure we know what the meaning behind all of it is?

I'm curious about how medieval Islam dealt with its religious history - e.g. in comparison to how the historical books of the Bible, Josephus, Eusebius etc. dealt with parts of the history of Judaism and Christianity. I'm thinking from the time of Muhammad up to around the time of Ibn Khaldun as the period in question. General overviews and specific examples both appreciated, sources/further reading on Islamic religious historiography even more so!

A few days ago I caught a train heading North from Verona through Northern Italy towards Bavaria and noticed quite a few castles in the hills/valleys near towns. My understanding of Italy in the middle ages is that it was primarily made up of independent or loosely affiliated city states. What was going on in this region just South of Bavaria at this time? Where did these castles come from and who did they belong to?
