Watching Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, set in 1938, in which Henry Sr refers to the Nazis as the slime of humanity and the forces of darkness. This was before WW2 broke out, let alone before the States joined in '41. I understand Spielberg's inclusion of this sentiment, but how accurate would it be? Was the antisemitism even known? And what were the Americans' thoughts on Nazi Germany in 1935-1938?

Masters of the Battlefield said that Napoleon was famous for this. So how does one actually screen an army?

Do they put tall units (e.g. cavalry) at the front to hide the smaller units, or do they send a small detachment in advance to lure the enemy elsewhere?

Or something else entirely?

And was the pistol a popular weapon from the beginning?

I was just taking a shower and began wondering about the history of the shower. Was there anything like a shower before modern plumbing? Or were there only baths until plumbing?

In Indonesia it is very common to find Indonesians who say that Indonesia would have been a better place if the British had colonized it. I am of the opinion that it is not true(e.g Sierra Leone,Pakistan...etc) but I would like to hear form people who know more about the topic.

I'm asking this out of pure ignorance of any history of Africa except that much of Africa was colonized by Europeans at some point.

I got this idea from a lot of strategy games. Often you have an army so big you can't sustain its upkeep based on the resources you already own. You can have a very large army as long as you continue to pillage cities and towns. Many games work in this way from Total War: Attila to browser games like Travian.

It got me thinking about how some older empires worked, specifically the Mongolians.

If the Mongolian Empire suddenly stopped conquests in China, Middle East and Eastern Europe would it have quickly collapsed? The vast majority of the area they controlled seems to lack the cities and farmland needed to feed and pay for such a large horde.

I was reading about the history of North America, and I was wondering why the countries in South America, after they became independant, chose to separate from each other. I know in North America Texas was independant, Vermont also independant for a while, and there could have been some country named Cascadia in north-west US/Canada.

But as there are so many cultures and such in North America, why did these regions chose to unify? Did the Union force its neighbours? Why didn't Canada split after independance?
