I am interested reading a good biography of Winston Churchill. What are the definitive biographies of Churchill to look for?

I am looking for info about these units ever since I found out about them, but I failed to find much.

(Born of a virgin, for example) What is the non-biblical consensus of Jesus? Are there any studies you could give me? I'm aware a lot of royal families practiced inbreeding for practical reasons, but I was wondering if there was ever a culture in which incest wasn't a taboo generally speaking.

A group of 60,000 were sent there. It seems like 33,000 made it to Polotsk, and 30,000 were able to eventually return to the Grand Armee on the march back.

Why was such a large detachment sent? Why did it stay in Polotsk as everyone else marched to Moscow? 50% is an insane mortality rate, but is much much lower than the rest of the Grand Armee. Why did the detachment suffer such a relatively smaller mortality rate?

Right now I am researching a garment for an upcoming exhibit. The garment is the top of an undress blue uniform (or jumper) from the navy circa 1870. However, the jumper is customized with fringe and cutouts. The donor of this piece mentioned that sailors were allowed to customize their uniforms during this time. I have been researching both primary and secondary documents, all state that no one was allowed to customize their uniform.

I am hoping that my fellow historians can shed some light on the topic if military men were allowed to customize their uniforms post-Civil thru the early 20th time frame.

So I just picked up Eastern Europe and Communist Rule by J.F. Brown. I'm not a historian, but I am interested in particular in the subject of 20th century Eastern and Central Europe and it was really cheap so I bought it.

My question is if I should be careful using a secondary source this old, even if it's just for my own understanding, rather than for any kind of academic work? While it is published by Duke University and it has fairly positive JSTOR reviews, it was written in 1988. Obviously, the book misses out on some fairly important developments.

Is it worth my time to even read this? Is there anything I should be especially careful of while reading it? Like I said, I'm not a historian, so it doesn't make sense as a value proposition for me to go out and buy a couple hundred dollar textbook that is more up-to-date.

What is he history behind there being so many different pronunciations of the same letter sequences and why are there so many ways of writing the same sounding words in the English language? I speak and write three languages and have basic knowledge a three others and English stands out as the language where the written and spoken form are most at odds. For example: Though, through, threw, tough, thought, thou and there, their, dare, they're. I'd heard that it was due to the waves of different peoples moving to the British isles and the pidgin language that ensued. Is this correct (or did illiterates invent the spoken form and deaf mutes the written)?
