It had a similar effect on the people being subject to it. In fact, after reading everything I could on past threads in this subreddit and on Wikipedia, I don't see why the Atlantic Slave Trade isn't also called a genocide. Is it because Africans were seen as one large whole and only a minority of them were enslaved? Would it qualify as a genocide since "a significant part" of West Africans were targeted/affected?

Marx's theoretical communist society was intended to be direct democracy in its purest form, both in the economy and politics.
How did it come to be that violent regimes such as those of Stalin and Mao Zedong (and other more modern examples) were able to manipulate the theories to create oppressive states?

I'm very interested in Archaeology, but I've got some questions; how do you actually get started? What does LIDAR actually do? And when/why do you decide to use a wheeler box grid vs. an open area grid? Thanks so much!

Did Canada's role in the crisis help their identity/autonomy that they were striving for?

While many will be aware of the behaviour of Japanese forces during World War 2, I wonder if much is know of how they conducted themselves during WW1, or for that matter, the 1905 war with Russia, in relation to their treatment of captives and conquered territory?

I've been to Kitty Hawk as well as the Air & Space Museums, but I haven't heard anything about how they directly benefitted from it.

Just for clarification, I'm talking about the 20th century.

I've read a bit about Kramer's theory of a "proto-Euphratean" language from which Sumerian may have derived certain names for craftspeople, geographical features, and personal appellatives from earlier forms.
Apparently this isn't seen as likely these days; could anyone explain (or at least point me towards) the arguments against it?

I know that when Charles de Gaulle was President of France there were tensions between him and the US and UK, but how serious were those tensions? Were there other examples of tensions between NATO allies? Did anything similar happen in the Warsaw Pact other then the invasion of Hungary and the Prague Spring?

It seems that the Wehrmacht would've discouraged this, what with experimenting with early camouflage patterns and blitz doctrines

My mother and I have been doing some digging in our family past and I have grown quite interested. I found that my great great great grandfather emigrated from Norway on May 21st, 1869. He was a farmer on a farm in Heidal, Norway. My grandfather changed his last name from Bjølstadløkken to the name of the farm (but it has since changed quite a bit in the spelling over time).
What I am wondering is was it common in this time period in Norway (or anywhere) to change your name to the farm you worked on? I understand things like Hansen meant son of Hans, but what other things influenced a persons last name in history?
Also, I am wondering if anybody has any insight as to what was going on in Norway in 1865 that may have made somebody emigrate? Was there a large famine, economic depression, etc? During this time period, the US was recovering from the civil war, was the US that much better of an option for people than Norway?

I am curious as to what happened to Greece afterwards. Most of Hellas was in the Delian and Peloponnesian League at the end. What happened to them? I know the Spartan's used "we will liberate Hellas" as a way to gain support for the war on Athens but did they really? All they did was create an oligarchy which was disbanded in a year anyways when Athens took back control.
