What's unique about the Fenians?

I'm reading a book about the history of Irish Nationalism and this isn't the first book in this genre that I've read. The Fenian Movement features prominently in all of these books but it confuses me every time. There were Nationalist movements before the Fenians. There were Nationalist movements after the Fenians. So why do the Fenians figure so prominently in Irish history? What makes them so significant?

[meta] Can we have one day a month for asking about current events with a historical angle?

It seems such a shame to waste the vast knowledge and perspectives that exist in /r/AskHistorians, especially when that's part of what studying history purports to do -- to help people better understand the world we live in.

[English] Do titles carry over through females?

I'll make this a straight forward question.

I'm related to this guy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Seymour,_1st_Duke_of_Somerset

Whom is a Lord Protector of Somerset.

Through one of his daughters, whom of which is a Lady. Lady Mary Seymour

Who married this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Cosby

To which I can solidly related from him all the way to me.

So the question is: Does Lady Mary Seymour's title translate through her and Francis's offspring and descendants.

Do I get a sweet ass title?

Whist I'm here does anyone have any tips on how to trace ancestery for free? I've already got an anchor with this Lord of Somerset, but I'm having trouble getting back any further.

[Edit] I just found this, http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/k/e/n/Tracy-Kennedy-Texas/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0907.html

I don't know how accurate it is, but it's a great read.

(Even though it is probably a folk tale I would still like to know it again please help.)

Does anybody know what Joan of Arc's armor looked like?

I have been drawing Joan of Arc obsessively, and contemplating designing a tattoo of her for myself... I've read a lot of literature (e.g. Christine de Pisan, Michelet, Peguy, Voltaire...) about Joan, but haven't been able to find any consistent descriptions of her armor, nor am I even remotely familiar with combat gear, let alone armor used in the middle ages. Can anyone provide me with some sources I could look at? Input? Thanks so much!

If I lived before the invention of glasses, how would I have been able to correct my vision?

I am wondering if back before glasses how did those who are farsighted read and write. Also, how did nearsighted people see things at a distance. Were there techniques or technology that solved these issues. To me it seems like a large issue.

On a side note, I also wonder if these people with vision impairment would be considered mentally disabled back then? Just a thought.

Did the Nazis have any plans regarding how they would hide the occurrence of the Holocaust if they had actually won the war?

I just can't imagine the Holocaust being something that they could hide for long even if they had won the war. Did any party leaders make plans regarding this issue or was it more of a "let's deal with the consequences later" type of attitude?

How do I find information regarding a soldier for the Korean War (conflict)?

Hello,

I am looking for information regarding my grandfather. I have never met him and I know little beyond his name and birthday. I am curious to know about his time served in the Korean War with the 11th Airborne Division. This has always been part of my life that has remained a mystery and I would love find out more. If you know of any resources, books, documents, friends/family, I would be greatly appreciative of your help. My mother once mentioned a book that had the names of every soldier who fought in the Korean War, does this book exist? If so is there anyway that I could get a copy for her? I just need a little help with resources and tools for my research.

Thank you for your time.

What surviving texts on the subjects of science and magick do we have from the Medieval Era or Renaissance?

[What I'm trying to learn is a bit long for a single question; so I'm just asking for period sources. I don't believe there's a rule against it; but it doesn't appear common. (I couldn't find an 'internet librarian' or 'research help' subreddit).]

Trying to get a feel for BOTH what people believed scientifically in the Medieval Era and the rituals of those practicing what they believed was Magick.

Particularly looking for areas where scientific knowledge was very wrong; salamanders born of fire, mice born from discarded clothing, etc. Sources I can easily get online would be easier than rarer items from libraries.

As I'm looking for what people believed in the era; sources that are older; but were still widely believed like the works of Pliny the Elder are also helpful.

Specific topics of interest; animals/plants (bestiaries), medicine (apothecary), alchemy, demonology (including Grimoires like the Key of Solomon).
