Is there a stated justification for why Aden fell under the jurisdiction of Bombay and wasn't placed elsewhere in the colonial structure? Was it as simple as there being no better place to put it?

Then as a follow up, what sort of administrative difficulties, if any, came up as a result of the distance and truly staggering differences between the cultures of the two places? For example, are there recorded incidents where the governing bodies of Aden were in direct conflict with those in Bombay?

I started reading "Fires of Vesuvius" by Mary Beard and she begins the book by telling detailed stories of various groups that tried to escape the doom of Vesuvius. How do historians piece these stories together without any real witnesses? I know Pliny the Younger writes about it, but these stories seemed to gathered by the remains of Pompeii. How do we know these accounts to be accurate?

On the holiday of Passover Jewish law dictates that a person must consume a measure of matza called a kizayis. The word kizayis literally means "like an olive." What exactly the volume of this measure is is a dispute among the medieval and post-medieval authorities. The authorities from Spain and the Mediterranean have smaller volumes that are more in line with the size of the actual olives and the authorities from France and Germany have much larger volumes. There are some who seek to explain that the European authorities erred as a result of not having ever actually seen an olive and therefore they were required to derive the volume from various other sources and ruled stringently. So what I would like to know is, would it have been possible for the authorities in Europe to have actually seen an olive or not? There are those that content that due to olives being a precious commodity and not native to the region that no one would have seen them. But I was under the impression that there are olives that grow in southern France. It wouldn't seem that unreasonable to me to think that rabbis living in the major cities and economic hubs of France would have an opportunity to see an olive. Thanks in advance if anyone can shed any light on this issue.

I'm travelling to Vietnam. What is one book you would recommend to make the most of my trip? Nothing on the Vietnam War - my American education has made me familiar enough with that period. The book can be history, anthropology, sociology, or whatever. It can be region-wide or restricted to Vietnam. The only conditions is it not be on the Vietnam war, it be non-fiction, and that it make my trip more enjoyable. I prefer academic books.
