I'm watching a show right now that's set during the Hundred Years War in France and one of the characters, a priest, references Aristotle in the same sentence as Thomas Aquinas and William of Ockham when he discusses theology. What was the Church's thoughts on those ancient philosophers and how did they rationalize their paganism?

I had heard that they originated as a way for Hispanics in Detroit to grow in strength and pride in the 1940s. Were they criminally affiliated back then or is that something that came up over time? They made it sound like it was the Knights of Columbus for the Irish in the 1800s but for Hispanics.

At what battle and around what time?

I have just finished reading 'one summer: America 1927' by Bill Bryson and have really enjoyed it. I was wondering, however, if there are any books in a similar style to Brysons yet about British history (any era really. Although preferably Pre ww1). Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Hey guys, so my understanding is that it's because capitalism leads to Weber's defintion of the modern state, "monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force" within the given territoriy, and that it leads to this through:

1. pacification of state territories (removal of internal rivals)
2. representation and growth of representative institutions.

If we're continuing along this line of thought (humour me here if you disagree with this perspective, it's for a debate I'm going to have in my course) why does capitalism lead to these two factors?

Why did Napolean fight through Europe all the way to Crimea? What was his goal?

It seems unlikely that this was purely due to empire expansion as I don't see how this would be feasible over such a short time.

As an example, let's say a Roman primary source gives us the only known reference to an event as having occured "300 years in the past". Now, Roman dating was fairly chaotic. Even after they went from 10 month years to 12 month years, they would periodically insert a 13th month. So simply multiplying the number of years by 5/6 wouldn't work obviously. Rarely would a "year" for the Romans correspond to the solar year, or equal out to 365 days. I assume this is a problem for historians of every culture, not just the Romans. So can anyone here give me an example of how historians are able to give objective dates for certain events?

The traditional narrative in Quebec History seems to be that the great changes in Quebec Society (secularization, provincial takeover of education healthcare and electricity, modernized nationalism etc.) of the 1960s were the result of rapid change in the wake of Premier Maurice Duplessis death in 1959. I know there are historians who argue that the changes that occured in the early to mid 60s were really the result of elements of Quebec society that had already existed for some time under Duplessis. Could somebody please explain to me the arguments that suggest that the Quiet Revolution was more of a natural course of action for Quebec?

When was this precedent set? What started the trend? Why would this style make sense given the historical context of the time?

Why didn't it start gritty/realistic like we see superhero movies today?

I am an undergrad History student in London, currently in my third year. My dissertation (10,000 words) is about Home Children, specifically children sent from the UK to Canada. I was wondering if there were any primary sources aside from newspaper archives (these are all I have access to at the moment) that could be helpful in my research.

This topic hasn't been covered by my university before and it seems that my supervisor can't provide me with the help I need. For those wondering why I would pick a topic that I can't get any help with, I chose this because it is close to me. My grandmother was taken from her family in a similar fashion when she was a child. I want to learn more about how 'opportunities' happened like this in the first place.

As for secondary sources, I am slowly gathering books so hopefully I shouldn't have a problem here (however, if you have any recommendations I'd be happy to hear them!). I've read a few suggestions on this sub reddit already that say to comb the footnotes for more sources, I've been taking that advice on board. My dissertation title isn't written in stone yet. Depending on my primary sources I may be able to focus on a different aspect. If there is a certain time period with an abundance of primary sources then I'd switch over from what I am currently doing in a heartbeat. Right now I wanted to look at 1869 - 1914, though this will change if the primary sources are available. While newspapers are adequate, I'd much rather look at sources with more substance.

I am rewatching Band of Brothers, and after every major wound, the medic comes in an tears a bag of sulfur and pours it on the wound. This may not be the best sub to ask, but I do not believe that they do this anymore. But what was the purpose of the sulfur?

After World War 2, the USSR established satellite states in eastern europe. Previously, the soviets had directly annexed Ukraine, Belarus and the baltic states. Why didn't they continue to add more republics to the Soviet Union?

There are a lot possible things to study in history. Naaturally, I suppose there are areas which don't get the attention they need.
