The ancients had an extremely limited scope of historical data about themselves. For example, the Greeks believed that they were descended from northern invaders known as the Dorians which we today know to be false. Did any ancients ever discover an object which went against their historical record and did it ever force them to rethink their historical past? Is anything like this recorded anywhere?

This statement gets cited quite often, but is it true? I'm more willing to believe it could be true for one battle, not the whole 1968, but what do historians think about it?
Edit: Thank you for your replies so far. It looks like this statement in regard to the whole 1968 is indeed incorrect. But could it be true for a single firefight/battle of 1968 and if both 1st LTs and 2nd LTs were to be included?

It's clear that the treasures had a distinctly Christian schema and the dates are near enough right. Taking the 'magic swords' of your enemies and giving them to your gods seems like a good way to curry favour and he was the big pagan Mercian.

We know that most Greeks buried their dead. Even as far back as the Myceneans, we know of tombs created for the burying of bodies. However, in Mythology the bodies of Heroes are often burnt. While there are exceptions, it exists throughout the Illiad and other Mythological sources. Did some city states continue to cremate? Why was cremation associated with the Golden age of Heroes? Could people elect for one or the other?

Just finished watching the show and was qurious how much of it is accurate. Especially the final battle with (spoilers?) Marcus Crasus. Did they actually build a massive trench on the battlefield in what seemed like a night?

Was it the same as in classical Greece with the same Gods, or is it completely different.

They're a relatively small group of people in the Eastern Mediterranean, yet they managed to colonize much of the Western Mediterranean and form some powerful states throughout, and have their language be immensely influential. So what gives?

It seems with Lenin and the Bolsheviks setting up the Cheka, they had the same aim as the Okhrana; to root out any opposition. In what ways were they different?

This weekly feature is a place to discuss new developments in fields of history and archaeology. This can be newly discovered documents and archaeological sites, recent publications, documents that have just become publicly available through digitization or the opening of archives, and new theories and interpretations.

I am not a religious person and don't know much about this at all, but something came up in conversation about Joseph and Mary not really going to Bethlehem as a census would never ask you to go to your home town and blah blah blah... not sure how legit that all is but it got me thinking.
