Most common newspaper suffixes in the English-speaking world appear to have an obvious link to their function: News, Journal, Herald, and the like. Is the suffix "Times" simply another of these where the "news" meaning has fallen out of use or is something else going on here?

It seems like fingerprints are one of the oldest forms of forensic evidence used in law enforcement. When was the technique of taking fingerprints at a crime scene first developed? Were people initially skeptical of its efficacy? Were there specific trials that set a precedent for the use of fingerprints as evidence?

I'm listening to the History of Byzantium podcast, and in Episode 49 - The Man Who Lived Too Long he discusses Cyrus's bribe to the Muslims under 'Amr ibn al-'As and mentions Cyrus trying to arrange a political marriage between Heraclius' daughter and 'Amr, amd 'Amr's conversion to Christianity.
Knowing what a hot mess sources for this time period are, I was wondering if anyone knew more about that, and what sources we have for that story?
Thank you.

As many of you will have seen, this video is making the rounds on reddit as it is, quite frankly, rather amazing.
Now, while the feats Lars Andersen demonstrates are certainly impressive, the many claims made in the video about historical archery seem to me a bit lacking in proper evidence. Of course he will have done more research on the subject than he mentions, but since I can't see it I'd like to ask the historians here specifically:
is it true that archers needed to be highly mobile and capable of quickly shooting while at a jog?
is it true that archers held arrows in their bow- or arrow-hand while shooting?
is it true that archers were required to fire at quick speeds, like the quoted 3 arrows in 1.5 seconds?
Additionally, in the debate that sprang in the comment thread, many people discussed the reasons for the disappearance of archery as a military skill. Many cited the introduction of plate armor, the pre-eminence of personal firearms and the decline in hobby archery as reasons. What does current historiography have to say about the causes of the decline of military archery?
Thank you to everyone who'll reply!

There are so many sources out there that document the feelings of American soldiers during the war, I'm watching Vietnam in HD right now and it's amazing how brutal the war was. But the one thing that strikes me is that despite how massive the losses were for the Vietnamese forces, there isn't much documentation (at least in the public) about how they felt about the war.
Specifically, in the Tet Offensive the Americans killed or captured 64% of the Vietnamese opposition... with such horrible losses and decimation, why did the war continue for years afterwards? What drove them to fight in spite of horrible odds? (Also, are those figures off?)
Thank you!

Hello AskHistorians!
I was wondering what the relationship between history and philosophy is? Not as departments but as disciplines. I see a lot of historians using philosophers ranging from people like Marx to people like Derrida or Lacan in their historical work and as such wondered if it is common practice in history to use the work of philosophers or it is something maybe more "niche".
Thanks for any answers!

What was the moral reasoning for their suicide? Were they seen as martyrs?
I don't really understand the reasoning behind why they would kill themselves, I mean, it doesn't seem like a logical war strategy.
Thanks for your insight.

Please let me know if I should be asking a different subreddit.
If the answer is that places where people are starving are poor, don't have access to birth control, have many kids as a social insurance policy - how is that different from the rest of human history?
Thanks!

Would love to match the view today, but can only see rubble, a sign saying 'no entry' and one with an arrow to 'Caen' and some words we can't make out. The road is cobbled and there are many damaged buildings, so middle of a town? Any ideas welcome! Have a look at the pic here http://www.normandythenandnow.com/to-caen-can-you-help-us-identify-this-1944-location/ Thank you.
