Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Since the whole purpose of the system was already centered around the worker's well-being.

How accurate is the depiction of them in shows such as Game of Thrones? Were they ever as elaborate as they have been depicted in recent literature?

I remember reading somewhere that mongol compact bows provided more power than english longbows of the time and I was wondering if anyone had a source of how they were made

my father was telling me that before the soviet invasion every bomb blast that happened in pakistan wasn't pinned on indian RAW intelligence agency only. there used to be an other intelligence agency that was also responsible for some deadly killing in pakistan and that was the KHAD of the afghanistan , and the major impetus for the support of the taliban was fueled by the past history btw the khad and pakistan. i was looking into some books for that matter and i would love if you can point me out to the books that describe the relations btw afghanistan and pakistan from its inception. PS:sorry for my bad english, its not my mother tongue.

Hi all. So this question is less about history itself, and more about the doing of history. I'm a first year PhD student and am planning my first big archival research trip. While I've worked in archives before, I don't feel as though I have worked particularly efficiently in them. What are your tips for working efficiently in archives? What should I prepare in advance? What should I not do? When planning, how much can I and should I realistically plan to examine in a day?
I'd welcome any and all thoughts and experiences of working in archives - I'm still fairly new to it, but I love it so far. I have to travel a long way to get to the archives that I need (transatlantic!) so I need to be able to make the most of it while I'm there.
Many thanks!

While watching Wolf Hall (sorry!) I found myself wondering why Tudor men and women seemed to keep their heads covered as much as humanly possible.
Cloth and leather caps in the house, more elaborate ones outside and only very occasionally was someones head uncovered.
I know fashion played a very important role, but was there more to it than that? Were their strict rules or was it more about convention?

I know it's a pretty large question, but when did people in Italy stop being 'Romans' and when did people in Greece stopped being 'romeoi' and started beeing Greek? My question is mainly inspired by this, where under nationality Taleb is identified as 'Rûm'. Does that mean that there are people who still technically identify as Romans?

Recently I stumbled uppon the x-ray of Susanna and the Elders by Arthemisia Gentileschi, but have been unable to find other "censorship" about this subject. I'm starting to believe it might be fake. Is there other historical art that was polemical at the time that had to be re-painted to fit the social mood, or is this painting a lonley example?

I was having an animated discussion with a friend on the mummification process when we came upon the topic of organ removals. Specifically - how did the Egyptians (or any era's embalmers) know to remove the brain? As far as I know there were no complex studies of human anatomy until much later, and, unlike the stomach or lungs which are revealed when opening the torso, how would embalmers know that something was in the head?

With Prince Andrew in the news as part of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, if he were to be charged with a crime and found guilty, is there a precedent for having him stripped of Royal titles/his claim to the throne?

I read a theory somewhere that because of the massive amounts of gold, silver, slaves and other resources from the Americas, Spain never had a good incentive to build up a strong industry, since resources were so plentiful. This was supposedly one of the main reasons for why Spain was surpassed by Britain in the long term

Since we now define an integral as the limit of a Riemann sum, but integrals were developed long before Riemann lived, what's going on here? Did integrals have a different definition when they were developed? Did Riemann's name get slapped on an older technique? It seems Riemann sums would predate integrals, if just for their simplicity.

I'm looking to learn more about modern paramilitaries and thought this would be a good place to investigate.
If you have any good resources about paramilitaries or (contra)insurgencies I'd be interested in learning more about them.
The only reason I ask is because I've investigated this myself and the impartiality is difficult to avoid, so I find hyper-polarized material.
I was looking to learn about the Irish Repub Army, Tamil Tigers and similar groups (along with the contra's, who worked against them).
Are there any good texts (primary or not doesn't matter to me) that speak about their strategies or their otherwise discuss their activites/concepts/principles?
Thanks!

I am currently a freshman in college and I am majoring in physics. However I really like history, so I was wondering if its worth it? I am currently discussing it with the history advisor about what classes to take. Also, what can I do with a minor in history?
Thanks in advanced!

I have been looking up Ibn Taghribirdi's "Nujum al-zahira fi muluk Misr wa'l-Qahira" (I read excerpts when I was an undergrad and thoroughly enjoyed his writing style) and Ibn al-Athir's "al-Kamil fi'l Tarikh" (to further my research on the Mongols in the Middle East) and from what I found, the former has books worth about $70 per volume (for 6 volumes) and the latter is about $90 for the complete work. Is there a way I can read these complete histories for significantly cheaper. Ideally, I want a book to put on my shelf, but I'm open to other sources as well. Thank you for you help.

I was struck by the thought on reading King Lear. That is set in ancient Britain but anything about jesters/court fools from throughout history would be much appreciated.
Would they have had families? How were they chosen? Are there instances in which they have been portrayed that are particularly accurate/inaccurate? What are the best sources for finding out more?
