After the split of the Roman Empire in 285, did people still look at the west and east as one big empire, politically split into two countries or did they see it as two separate large empires as we do today?

The title says it all. How did Romans and foreigners look at the fact the empires were split?

How prevalent was Homelessness/Poverty in the Soviet Union?

Given the enormity of social programs and the nature of communism were there homeless populations in cities under Soviet administration? How prevalent was poverty and how effectively did basic services reach the poor? I'm looking more specifically at large urban areas during the 1950s to 1960s but any period or location helps.

At what point did post-Roman Europe technologically surpass the Roman Empire at its height?

I know the infamous "gap left by the Dark Ages" graph is wrong on a lot of levels, but obviously there must have been some dropout after the empire dissolved.

Is there any other sources beside Aeneid that tell what happens to Aeneas after Trojan War?

Aeneid claims Aeneas left Troad and migrated to Italy and a modern book (with no citation) said Aeneas succeed Priam as King of Troy. Can anyone verify or deny latter claim?

Was the information aquired by the United States from the human experiements conducted by the japanese useful?

Considering a bunch of high profile characters got away with quite horrible human experiementation in exchange for the US taking part of that information I assume it must've been at least a bit useful yet I've never heard of anything being learned.

Hey, /r/askhistorians, I have an 1807 letter from father to son and I'm having trouble deciphering the handwriting. Can you help me out?

the Gibbon family was a well-known Richmond, VA military family in the early 1800s. They are most known today because James Gibbon, Jr. (the addressed in the letter provided) famously died at the Richmond Theatre Fire in 1811.

This 1807 letter apparently refutes a popular theory about James Gibbon, Jr. concerning his love life. The (myth) story goes that he met and fell in love with the beautiful Sally Conyers in November 1811, shortly before they attended the theatre and both died in the blaze.

However, I believe this letter makes specific reference to a "Miss C" that would suggest the Gibbon family, and James in particular, already knew Sally. I can't make sense of the handwriting, though, and can't figure out what, if anything, James Gibbon, Sr. says about "Miss C". Care to help out?

In one of his Q&A videos, YouTuber CGPGrey states that a country can achieve self-sufficiency (i.e. no imports or exports) if they resort to a Medieval level of technology. Were Medieval European or Asian countries actually self-sufficient in this way? Could they have been?

Here is the video in question. I know that, at least as far as Japan goes, there was minimal trading with countries such as Portugal, but can these countries have been self-sufficient nations without such trade?

What was life like for women in the Sassanid Empire?

I'm listening to the history of Rome podcast, and it seems like the Romans did not hold women in high regard.

Were the Sassanids, in say, 400 or 500 AD, like their western neighbors?

  1. Could women exist independently of husbands/fathers?

  2. Could women own businesses?

  3. Did women have equal contractual rights and fair rules governing divorce?

  4. Could women hold formal military, political, and religious power?

Is it true you were not allowed to ask kings a question, not even to clarify an order?

Europe, 1200-1900, or if you want narrower, France 1500 to revolutoon.

I just keep reading it in historical novels how even close courtiers would not allowed to asks kings questions. Like "go take this letter to Prince X" and then they could not ask "where is Prince X"

Is it true? How would this work?

Officially Germany and Japan surrendered unconditionally in WW2. Unofficially were there terms, promises or implied conditions accompanying either of the surrenders?

For example, did any German officers surrender their troops with promises made that the officers would not stand trial for war crimes.

Was there any kind of understanding for when surrendered troops would be released from POW status?

If promises were made who made them and were they honored?

Hey! Recently I got assigned to write a paper stating some of the pros and cons that colonialism had in Africa. When you try to research and find for pros I had a difficult time finding anything. I am by no means stating that colonialism in Africa was good thing, but I'm interested in hearing what the other side has to say. Thanks!

Did medieval Europeans have any form of meditative "body discipline" akin to yoga?

Obviously they had martial arts; that's not what I mean. I'm wondering about a discipline - even an esoteric one - with an emphasis on understanding, appreciating, and caring for one's own body.

What was going on in America between the Revolution and the Civil War?

I am not an American, and pretty much all I know of American history I learned from an old computer game. And I apologise for the broad question, but I am open to all kinds of answers :)

You guys had the Revolutionary war against England, and later a civil war amongst yourselves, and after that, more or less the modern age, but what was going on in America between those two big formatory wars?
