In the late 16th century, Portugal banned the East Asian slave trade. Why did they ban it? Why wasn't the same "courtesy"extended to West Africa?

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Japan#Portuguese_trade_in_Japanese_slaves

The Portuguese began trading Japanese slaves in the early 16th century, particularly slave girls that were taken to Portugal to serve as sex slaves. The link mentions "even black Africans" owned Japanese slaves. Why did the Portuguese ban the trade? It certainly seems it was profitable. The same was not done regarding West Africans. Why?

Thanks.

Were housing projects and poor neighborhoods void of violence in the first half of the 20th century?

I don't think so. Thomas Sowell has for the longest time pushed a narrative that Harlem and other impoverished black communities were not crime ridden until US welfare expansion of the mid 20th century. This is contrary to what James Baldwin has written about of his youth coming up in Harlem. WEB Dubois addressed black violence in "Philadelphia Negro." So I don't know where Sowell is coming from.

When seceding from the Union, were Southern legislatures representing popular opinion or the interests of slave-owning elites?

In this r/history thread several commenters observe that voting laws in 1860 were a bit of a mess. As a result, common white folks in Southern states were under-represented in their state legislatures compared to rich slave-owning aristocrats just like in modern times. This led to Southern states seceding without necessarily taking into account popular opinion.

Additionally, the commenters mention that the national Congress was imbalanced in the favor of the North, which led to Southern states fearing a slavery ban was imminent, leading to them seceding pre-emptively.

Are these claims accurate? Was secession popularly supported?

What do we know about Prophet Muhammad with 100% (or at least 95%) certainty?

Off the top of my head, I can say:

  1. He was Arab,
  2. Lived in the ~7th century
  3. Uttered the Quran
  4. Migrated from his birth city (mecca?) to another (medina)
  5. Fought many battles/wars

Is there anything more we know about him with certainty?

How to find good historical sources?

Have been struggling to find sources for an investigation I'm attempting to write about the unification of Japan in the Sengoku period and wondered if anyone had some useful tips or advice on how to find good sources. Guess the rules here are pretty tight and sorry if this breaks one of them but I thought it was a relevant question.

What led to the decline in Swing music and dancing in the United States?

Whenever I watch a show or a movie set in the 1920s-1940s it seems like swing music and dancing were generally common in the United States. In American culture today there isn't a genre that everyone can dance to (except the ones that have instructions in the lyrics). So what happened?

Books on Post War Japan?

Hi guys, I'm currently an undergraduate majoring in history. One of my subjects I'm taking now is on Modern East Asia, and at the end of the term we have to write an academic term paper on a topic of our choosing. I chose post war japan, and I was wondering if anyone knew some books on the topic. I'm mainly interested in the 1950's-60's, but I won't mind if gets a little farther than that.

French naval forces in WW2

So i came across this thread:

http://www.reddit.com/r/awesome/comments/2s5t9s/french_wwii_submarine_surcouf_equpipped_with/

Which supposedly shows submarine from the French Navy. I never knew that France had subs back then! Were they just relics from WW1 or retrofit from another country? How big was the French navy back then and how big of an impact did they have in the war?

I know the german Uboats were very effective but you never hear anything about the french army.
