Are there any known sources about Chinese or Japanese acknowledging that Europeans has significantly surpassed them at some point?

Naturally, I mean some historic quotes or books or edicts, not modern XX century statistical summaries of Chinese/Japanese economic research.

[Meta (sort of)] Booklist request! I want to know more about Gnosticism and Mystery Cults

The generally excellent /r/askhistorians booklist doesn't have anything on two subjects I find myself fascinated in, so I figured I'd create a thread, and see if anyone here could point me in the right direction.

The first subject is Gnosticism. I'm looking for relatively modern books (i.e., at least are informed by the Nag Hammadi scriptures) that can talk about Gnosticism in some depth, ideally describing differences between various branches, e.g., Valentinism, etc.

Secondly, I'm interested in any sort of scholarly work on the mystery cults, mostly (but not limited to) Orphism, Dionysian cults, etc. I understand that this subject has much less data to go on, and is more speculative, but anything is more than I know right now.

Bonus: Anything discussing charismatic religion in early Christianity (Montanism, etc.) would be super cool as well.

Thank you all, and I hope you bury me!

Was Hitler a Fascist?

While to many there is no one who better personifies Fascism than Hitler, I have seen others make the claim that Hitler was in fact not a fascist. I know this is a difficult question to answer since Fascism seems to have a number of definitions depending on who you talk to. It's just interesting to see people make the claim that Hitler was not a fascist.

Were there any bars or something similar in Rome around the year 1 BCE?

I recall reading "Claudius the God" by Robert Graves where he wrote a section about the Emperor Claudius discussing the lack of good wine houses in Rome anymore. So were there any wine houses, or bars in Rome?

Following the American war for independence, were there any movements or proposals to change the names of any individual states?

Given that many, if not all, of the original 13 colonies had names of British origin, I was wondering if any lingering bitterness after the war caused anyone to suggest changing any states' names. If there was, why did names remain unchanged? Did any counties/cities/towns/etc change names (a la Berlin, Ontario in Canada being renamed Kitchener during WW1)?

Why do we mostly hear about Jewish victims of the Holocaust, when so many other groups were targeted as well?

To add more detail to my question... in every history class I've taken or book I've written, the Holocaust is mainly depicted as being an almost totally Jewish thing, with other victims (homosexuals, communists, etc.) being just a footnote. Obviously, I'm not saying that the Jewish victims don't deserve to be mentioned, but it seems like so many people don't realize what other atrocities were committed by the Nazis.

Why did this happen? Did mention of the other groups just fade away as time went on, or was it just never as "popular" to discuss other groups that were targeted? I've always been curious.

Thank you!

Where did the idea of gendered nouns come from, and how did they spread?

Spanish, French, German, and numerous other European languages have gendered nouns, i.e. der Mann/die Frau (the man/the woman). Such distinctions don't exist in English. Where did gendered nouns originally come from, and how are they related to languages without them?
