How did they form? What from? Where? Did they exist together or were they created after the previous one fell? Specifically, how did religion and war affect the growth or collapse of each caliphate? <-- How did this pertain to the Abbasid Caliphate specifically?

I'm leaving out Hershey, PA because while Hershey's are super popular they are rarely considered to be good chocolate. It seems like there should be some Mexican or Central American or US chocolate region so why hasn't this happened? (Or if it has, why isn't it as well known among Americans an Europeans?)

We often hear that salt was worth as much as gold once. But I also heard that Israel was a useless territory to empires back then. So if that's the case why didn't people take advantage of the abundance of salt there?

So we're currently learning about the British colonies and they're various wars (French and Indian, Revolutionary, etc.) in school. On a map handout, I noticed Russia in the northern Alaska area. Tell me about French internal politics after WW2. I know France was more or less the center of New Left / post-Marxist ideology and had one of the largest Communist parties in Europe, and yet was engaged in even more colonial wars than the British. What was the general political bent of the French public at the time? Did socialists/communists try to implement nationalizations like in say Britain?

I like to read about politics and history a lot, and it just seems like France had a significantly different political landscape than other countries

How were early maps made before the invention of flight? I know it's a silly question but it seems a bit difficult tracing the coast while going along it with a ship. And how accurate were they?

Is there a common "standard" of evidence or analysis that all fields of history hold to, or does each field practice its own standard?

I was inspired by a post on AskReddit where some British users said that their universities had approached the Revolution (or, I suppose, Rebellion) as a learning lesson for the Empire in terms of policy.

I am curious if anybody knows of any books that might cover this perspective. I checked the AskHistorians Book List, but I couldn't find anything in there.
