I'm doing some research on Western Slavic people for a story I'm working on; first chunk focuses on a small tribe in what is now northern Poland in the mid 6th century. I'm also hoping to include the deities Morena, Vesna, Perun and Veles.

I've done some basic research (read: I Googled and checked Wikipedia) but would like to be a little more accurate. Do you have any advice on books/websites I should check out/avoid like the plague?

The husband and I were watching the movie Master and Commander when a scene came on showing a boy getting his arm amputated. This started a conversation between us about why amputations were done with saws. It seems like a swift blow from a sharpened clever like weapon would be more effective and faster than a saw. That said, I'm not a doctor and don't know a lot about the tools that are available at the time. I figured there must have been a reason, and you fine ladies and gentlemen would know what that reason was.

For example, are there other surviving letters that are known to have been authored by Paul but which, for whatever reason, are not considered scripture?

I've often wondered if he named St. Petersburg as such because he knew its importance as the last possible fall-back position, or was it an accidentally chosen city that he poured the souls of Russians into simply because it bore his name.

I'm interested in women's roles during the final decades of the empire, especially around the killing of the Janissaries. Would women be moving freely around the city during the time, or did they mostly stay indoors?

My question is this: how did the Great Depression affect so many different countries at such a rapid pace? I know that many economists argued that the Great Depression was bound to happen, and the economy by then was fairly globalized. But still, how did the Great Depression, something that started in America, affect the whole world?

What significant/interesting events occurred between 476AD - 1096AD?

They say pamphlets such as Common Sense were widely read and very popular, but how did people have time to read it? Not only was it really long, but the language seems a bit abstruse. Was that considered normal language, or did they think it to be very hard to follow?

Additionally, was literacy emphasized in education? Did people who didn't attend school due to costs learn reading on their own? Could they have followed the wording of Common Sense?

I visited Hatfield House a while ago, where Queen Elizabeth I lived as a child. On one wall there is a family tree for her, painted as a tree with leaves. Amongst the people it shows are Macbeth, King Lear and Adam and Eve. I know Macbeth was real - although Shakespeare wrote fiction about him. I know Cymbeline was a real Roman client King too. But I've never seen direct evidence about King Lear.

So is he known? And did he have three daughters, whether or not they followed the plot of the play? When did he live?

I really only need one book, preferable an E book or a set of websites, that shows the influence of Chinese and Korean cultures and Heian. Thank you for your time
