It can be debated in modern times as of whether he was a good leader or a bad leader, but is there any sources of how he was viewed in ancient times as a leader?

I've been doing reading on the Arab-Israeli conflict and the oil embargo, and many different writings mention that one of the political goals of these states was to "alter the status of Jerusalem". I have been able to find plenty of literature on the other major goal (To alter Israeli policy to return territories captured in the 1967 war to grant the “legitimate rights” of the Palestinians) but can't seem to find much in the way of the former.

Hey! I'm new to this subreddit, and I was brought here because of my current interests in European history! I am a history buff, particularly for World War 1, and have a deep interest in the history of several European Countries, particularly Spain, France, Germany, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, all up until the beginning of the 20th century.

Now I looked over the books list, and I found a book or two I was interested in, but I didn't find anything in particular for the other subjects I hope to read up on.

If it isn't a hassle, and as long as I am allowed to ask this, is anyone familiar with a book for any of the following subjects?

• Imperial Germany (1871-1914/1918)
• Imperial Spain ( I think I already found a book about this that is about the rise and fall of Imperial Spain between 1469-1716, but any other suggestions in this timeframe would be awesome!)
• France during the 19th and early 20th Century(s) (Or just a book about the French Third Republic, since I can always just find a book about the Napoleonic Era to satisfy most of the 19th century bit.)
• History of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Mainly looking for a book that is a detailed history of its subject, and covers all of the general aspects of the country, such as Politics, Military, Diplomacy, Culture, etc.

Thank you to anyone that can help, the nature of European countries between 18th and 20 century really fascinate me, and at the same time these are the types of books that are hard to find. Any help would be appreciated :)

Just looking at historical populations Charleston was right up there with those cities until the 1820s. Obviously the industrial revolution played a huge part of that, but why didn't Charleston experience the sort of immigration and explosive growth as some of its northern counterpoints??

Is there any specific criteria regarding the choices in naming? Was it in acknowledgement of their prior service to the U.S.? Wouldn't their service against the Union have given cause to not give them an enduring legacy?

Always thought it slightly odd and figure there has to be more to it then "We pulled the name out of a hat."

I was just watching the Genghis Khan vs Easter Bunny Epic Rap Battle and one of the lines is something like "Now my DNA's in dudes from New York to Japan". Is there any sort of rough estimate of how many children Khan had in his lifetime? Because apparently it's a lot.

Or any other far-leftist historian. Obviously, I'm looking for history from a leftist perspective, but I'm not sure where to look. I was disappointed by Zinn's book; so I'm looking for something that has more academic legitimacy.

Why were they in technological stasis?

Assuming you're in English speaking countries.

I have heard of the Greek Antikythera mechanism and the Viking sun stone, but were there other methods people used to travel by sea, or was it just off of dead reckoning and gut feeling?

This was just something that has been on my mind for a while.

I know during Cannae, Hannibal fought on foot with the main line to inspire his men, but what other examples or interesting things like this happened?

Some related sub-questions:

1. What were troop rations like during the First World War?
2. How much difference was there between the standard rations of the French, British, Germans, Russians, etc?
3. Was there even such a thing as "standard rations"?
4. Did officers get better meals than enlisted men?
5. How did the quality or quantity of the food change for the various combatants over the course of the war?

I'm especially interested in the experience of the French troops -- most of the sources I have found so far tend to focus on the experience of the British or the Germans.
