This question occurred to me while I was at my school gym after my Golden Age of Athens course. Did the Greeks perform squats/deadlifts/other such activities? Did they have other ways of compound resistance training? Did they only do body weight exercises? I'm extremely curious.

I always see movies were people go to war and clash and everyone gets caught up in a fight. I get that it wasn't exactly like the movies but was it common for soldiers to kill there brothers in arms at such close range with swords or even arrows? I have read a little bit about how ideological factors and indoctrination, especially on the part of the Germans, led to atrocities on the Eastern Front. The bitterness between Germany and the USSR following WWI also played a role. What I am really interested in, though, is finding how the nature of combat itself contributed to the barbarisation of warfare in the east. Were there unique aspects of combat there (tactics, weaponry, etc.) that made the barbarisation of warfare more likely?

For example, Reform Judaism as an idea goes all the way back to Revolutionary France as far as I can tell, but I have no idea how quickly it caught on. Today Hasidic Jews are something of a rarity (if you live outside of New York from what I've read), but something tells me this wasn't always the case. Until what decade/era were non-Hasidic Jews the exception and not the norm?

Lets say a wealthy man wants to build a house. Was there anyway he could buy a slave for the short period of time he needed? Did any slave owners offer their slaves up for work or were they already to busy doing other things?

Why is it that blue pens are just barely secondary to the black, whereas greens, reds, and the like are hardly used except for corrective/decorative purposes?

I know very little about the history of Tibet.
Was the goal just to 'make China whole', as it were? Or were there economic, political, or military (buffer zone?) reasons for the Chinese to want Tibet under their control?
It just seems like kind of a pointless acquisition.

I just read this post discussing how gladiator combat would have worked in ancient Rome. It specifically discusses how a lanista supplied the editor with gladiators.
I'm curious about how this contract would work. Specifically the lanista would seem to risk having gladiators die. If this occurred in combat, I can see that just being a risk of the job; however, if the editor decided the losing gladiator should be killed, would the editor have to compensate the lanista for the loss?

I was just curious what times before modern history its recorded that one nation heard another one had a natural disaster or something and sent workers, resources, or soldiers to charitably restore order (instead of as some cover for a military invasion.)

I'm doing a project for school about the children of concentration camps (not strictly Holocaust, but preferable). The project was inspired by this picture: http://i.imgur.com/svnprL8.jpg
It would be incredibly helpful if there is additional information people can provide, like mentioning articles or books I could get more information from, perhaps sharing photos of children in concentration camps they could share.
Was there a particular home these children could go to for treatment, were there health centres (so to speak) set up to help children cope with their trauma?
Are there many stories of severe mental breakdowns?
When did children living in Britain or America (so on) learn about the Holocaust? When was learning about it introduced into the school curriculum?
Were these children bullied by non-Jewish kids?
Could the children go back into the education system or did they experience too much trauma?
Were there particular orphanages these kids were sent to?

Does anyone know what Battle this was or just more info in general about the bomb that was buried under the trenches then the soldiers retreated to make the enemy advance into their trap? I think that the explosion was claimed to have been heard in London.

I was visiting a doctors office and on the way in I saw various paintings by different artists of fruits on a table. I'm sure we've all seen a few in our lifetime and even parodies of them on every cartoon growing up, the painter with his bowl of fruits has his artwork comedic ruined.

I am going for holidays and searching for good books.
So far i have read a few books about uboots, land warware, but being passionate about flying my favorite books are memories of pilots. The best book I have read so far is Half a Wing, Three Engines and a Prayer , which was fantastic book, i could not put it away. With very detailed stories from many missions, you cold feel many of the emotions that crews flying B17 felt.
What similar books would you recommend that would prevent me from going to sleep until i finish the book?
I am especially interested in carrier war in pacific , to feel how difficult it was to land damaged plane at night, with rough sea. But it is very hard to find books that have a lot of action inside. I have tried My Carrier War but it was pretty boring, with almost no action in the air.
I would gladly take any recommendation for book with action packed memories from WW2 or Vietnam - Air, land or sea warfare.
