Did syphilis exist in Pompeii?

I saw a claim that two skeletons from ancient Pompeii have signs of congenital syphilis. This was on a tv show with a German or Dutch researcher.

Is this likely?

Why did social justice movements -- like Feminism, LGBT Rights, and Anti-Racism -- emerge in the 19th/20th century instead of earlier in history?

I've been recently wondering why social justice as a concept and series of movements exploded in the 20th century. Obviously the suffragette movement and abolition movement emerged somewhat earlier, but considering the long history of slavery and female disenfranchisement it still seems as though these movements began rather abruptly.

Was the 19th/20th century simply a perfect storm for these equality movements to emerge? Were there other periods in history where these movements had a chance to succeed, but didn't quite make it? Is this more of an AskSocialScience question?

Are there any interior pictures of New York's private social clubs available from the 1950's and 60's? If so, where can I find them.

I apologize if this is not the appropriate place to ask this question. I am currently doing research for a film that features several scenes in an esteemed New York social club (a la The Mauntauk, The New York Yacht Club, The Metropolitan Club, The Harvard Club of New York, etc.). For reference, I require photos of social clubs in the target "era" so that the filmmakers can get a sense of the atmosphere and vibe for reproduction when shooting. Pictures such as this are very difficult to come by, seeing as published photography of these clubs is usually prohibited unless expressly permitted by the club. I assume that of all people on reddit, you historians would be the most likely to be able to satisfy such a specific request. If this is not the appropriate subreddit, I would very much appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

Did Nazi Germany aim to (eventually) take back and reunite the German Empire's colonies lost from WWI?

Namibia, Qingdao, Tanzania, most of the German Empire's countries were disbanded after their defeat in WWI. Like Germany itself did Nazi Germany want to "reunite" the German Empire and try take back the former colonies?

If this wasn't the case then why not?

How did early Native Americans regard and explain weather events such as tornadoes?

I don't know much about Native American culture or history. I was just wondering what they would use to explain tornadoes. Considering they happen in a pretty good portion of the country, are their different stories and explanations based on the tribe or region?

How were the different names of the Zulu amabutho given to them?

Any good literature on the topic of the Zulu War 1879 gives us names of the different ibutho involved in the battles, names such as uKhandempemvu, uMxapho, uDududu and iNgobamakhosi. Men were so identified by their ibutho that some of them were known by the name of their ibutho years and years after the war. But what do they mean? How were these names selected and given to the different ibutho that were formed?

What is the history behind not flying the American Flag at night?

An issue has recently come up in my neighborhood about flying the flag at night. I was wondering what is the historical significance of this rule. I know it was introduced in the "Flag Code of Conduct" in 1923. But I couldn't find any reasoning behind it. Can anyone shed more light on this subject for me?

A Level Personal Study Help

For my history A level we have to come up with a person, place or event that is historically significant and controversial. What they mean by controversial is that opinions of the place, event in time or the person has changed from his time and now (example: George Bush--->initially liked then unanimously disliked). My ideas at the moment are George Bush and the atom bombs but I can't do anything about Germany from 1918-1945 and the French Revolution. Any ideas guys? Thank you so much!

Does the word "jewelry" have anything to do with Jews?

The word has Jew in it, and my understanding is that Jews were often pushed into things like making jewelry or banking by many European societies. How correct (if at all) is this assumption? And are there any actual connections between the word and the stereotype? (Interestingly enough, the word cliche actually comes from the french verb clicher, meaning to stereotype.)

What exactly were the Red Lancers that Rudyard Kipling mentions in a few of his stories?

There are a couple of references in "Plain Tales from The Hills".

One seems quite important:

but Tods knew the Red Lancer and most of the Members of Council personally

Others seem like regular guards:

Red Lancers came in, and the Head Chaprassi, who speaks English, came in, and mace-bearers came in, and ladies ran downstairs screaming “fire;”

The closest I can find is 16th The Queen's Lancers, they were known as "Scarlet Lancers" and stationed in India but they were a cavalry regiment.
