I wonder if there are any linguistic historians on this board who know anything about how and "why" ideographic writing systems developed vis-a-vis alphabetic writing, and how this might have affected relative historical development. A question which particularly interests me - which was the first Chinese characters, or character? My conjecture is that it must have been "death" but this is entirely speculative.

I've been listening to a lecture on ancient civilizations, and I heard about a troupe of ancient Greek youths who would perform acts of blasphemy to test the gods. They would do things like break into temples and eat the offerings to prove that the gods didn't exist, given that it was expected that their blasphemy would lead to ill fortune. The lecturer called these individuals the "Seekers of Ill Fortune" and for the life of me, I can't find any resources about them. Does anyone know of a website that could provide some good details? Thanks!

By refugee settlements I mean settlements like the medieval English settlement of New England after William the Conquerer. Another example would be like how Brazil settled Confederates after they lost the American Civil War. The only possible info about a settlement or colonial ideas was the theory that Christopher Columbus was a Byzantine prince.

Was English the predominant language in Ireland during this time? According to Wikipedia, English rule of law was reinforced and expanded in Ireland during the latter part of the 16th century. So, I would assume that's the case? Would, therefore, Irish people being born around this time be named Henry and John instead of Einri and Sean?
What would the Irish and English call German speakers during this time period?
Was there a history of Germans immigrating to Ireland or England during these centuries?
Context: I'm exploring family history, and the 2 oldest ancestors I could find were named Henry and John Germany. I'm trying to figure out why/how they got the surname 'Germany.' A theory I've heard is that they immigrated to Ireland from Germanic lands and were called 'the German' (e.g. Heinrich the German) until it turned into a surname at some point.

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

When reading about the invasion of Europe, I often find mentions of the tech differences between the opposing sides. The German tanks seem to be regarded as better machines (more armor, heavier gun), but the American tanks were more numerous. This obviously affected tactics, but how and when did this information get spread? I know that an M3 wasn't going to be able to penetrate the front armor of a Tiger, but how the actual tank crews learn this? Was it word of mouth or was there official training?
