It just seems odd to me that 1) America has had a military base in seemingly every country for so long. 2) Why other developed countries with militaries would allow the U.S to station troops in their borders.

The Mongolian Empire was obviously huge, but would most people from a city under Mongol rule that was far away from Mongolia actually know they were part of the Mongolian empire the way people in Jerusalem understood they were under Roman rule did? Rome left behind Roman buildings and culture much like Greece did as well, but unless I'm unaware I don't think there is any such things left behind by the Mongols. Finally, did mongols actually settle the land they conquered? If not is it really an empire in the same way that Rome or Greece were or did they just subjugate people over a vast amount of land?

I wonder what society first held the mythological idea that skeletons could reanimate and how long ago the idea originated. Were they viewed as demonic? Vengeful? A positive visit from ancestors? What did they believe made it physically possible?

What details (economically, culturally, politically) made the 1920's roaring?

I know they had a lot of slave trade back in the day, but today there are barely any traces of black lineage in the country. The beats still exist in tango music, though, so it seems like people of african decent must have been a large portion of the population at some point.
I've heard from South Americans and saw in a documentary (about tango music) that it was something of a genocide. That would be horrible if it's true, but I've never heard anything to that affect before traveling to South America. If someone could summarize what happened or refer me to some resources, that would be great.
Thank you historians!

As the title states, why are demonic beings commonly illustrated with pitchforks or tridents? Are the weapons actually pitchforks, tridents, or something different? Is there any historical significance behind this common depiction, and where did this concept begin?
Examples of this phenomenon:

Just wondering, did they originate from one place, or did several cultures invent sleeves independently of one another? I imagine they were necessary in cold climates, so were they a foreign concept to, say, the pre-Columbian tropics?

Okay, so I used to know the actual name for the "nicknames" of historical figures, but for some reason I can't remember it.
I've always been a big fan of the historical figures that carry the "the Pious" or "the Lionhearted" etc., but recently I cannot remember what the term is. I know it's not nickname, but I need your help. What is the word I'm looking for?
Also, what is your favorite "the" from history?
I've always been partial to Charles the Fat or Pepin the Short. Why? Cause they make me smile.

It always seemed kind of obvious to me (my family was posted to Moscow in August 1991), but opinion is clearly scattered depending on when the author was writing.
Can anyone explain the different assumed end-points? Big ones seem to be 1985 (glasnost + Gorbachev), 1989 (fall of Berlin Wall) and 1991 (coup / collapse of USSR).

Nothing kitschy like "informal guide" or "haunted history." Definitely not solely focused on Katrina and Katrina-related issues. Thanks!

Things with personal feelings and emotions. Nothing about history so much as just a log of daily life.

I assume both were introduced during the British occupation, but contrary to most of the rest of the world, Cricket seems much more popular in most of India. I'm wondering if there is a consensus among historians as to how that came to be.

France had always had kings before Napoleon, why did he crown himself to emperor and not king?

A lot of modern athletes have physical ailments as they get older as a result of the stress placed on their bodies. I would imagine jousting would have a similar effect since it seems brutal, but did jousters(?) do it enough to where it would effect their bodies later in life? And if so, do we have any first hand accounts of this?

You'd think that they would've found out from either spies at the ports, reconnaissance planes or submarines in the channel.
Thanks in advance for the answer.

I've read a bit recently about how American segregation of troops stationed in the UK was kind of shocking and offensive to many British soldiers and civilians. I'm interested in how they got along with military personnel recruited from the empire.
