Benjamin Franklin - 'Democracy is like two wolves and a lamb...' Is this a real quote?

Been trying to find out to if this is a genuine Franklin quote:

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

Or is it an example of made up 'wisdom' used to support a political viewpoint?

World War II Rations

I've been looking up modern military ration packs today. They're very interesting as a microcosm for a nation's cuisine and culture. Modern ones seem very balanced and have a huge amount of variety them so I can see they'd be good for morale.

But what did Soldiers in World War II eat? Were they given individual ration packs like today and how were those divided out? Also in situations like the Great Patriotic War how would rations be delivered to the Russian and Germans in somewhere as brutal as Stalingrad?

Any recommendations for a good espionage book?

I have to write a book report for class on an espionage book and was hoping someone would have a good book for me to read. I do really like WWII but if there are really good books out there that aren't WWII I would be good with that too. Something exciting would be nice.

What happened in Turkey and C. Asia during WW2?

More specifically, Turkey and the -stans? I can't find anything pertaining to the political, social and economic situation of Turkey at that time, and C. Asia seems to be an industrial footnote to the Soviet war machine. Are there any books of note covering these subjects?

In norse/viking culture what is the difference between a Huscarl and Hirdsman?

I've seen some differing opinions online from

  • they're the same thing
  • one is professional warriors and the other are appointed into a permanent warrior role (from that of a farmer, say)
  • one is a higher 'class' than the other

Looking for something more definitive.
Thanks!

Feudalism in the Muslim world

Much has been spoken about on Medieval European feudalism, the recruiting of manpower for the military and ties of obligations between peasants, serfs, landowners, nobility and the crown.

I know I'm generalizing the feudal system but did the Muslim world follow the same "rules" as in Europe?

I know that to call it the "Muslim world" means anywhere from the establishment of Islam to the late-Ottoman Empire and stretching from Moorish Spain to SE-Asia but pardon my ignorance as I know nothing on the subject.

There are (outdated) theories of history that hold that 'savages' and 'primitive peoples' are merely in early stages of evolution from us. What is the name of this theory, and who are the main theorists?

There are specific theories of history that hold that 'primitive peoples' are merely in early stages of evolution, essentially 'behind' us, waiting to catch up. These theories tend to superimpose time periods such as 'renaissance' and 'modernity' onto other cultures; as though every culture were moving in the same direction, and those primitive cultures are merely backwards/behind rather than genuinely different.

I cannot for the life of me remember who the main theorists behind this are, or what a collective name for this theory of civilization might be. (Maybe Benedict Anderson, Freud, even Berkeley, some part of the 'westward course of civilization theory?)

Could anyone help enlighten me?
