Was there a ridiculous amount of alcohol drank in the American West?

I'm on a Deadwood binge thanks to Amazon picking up older HBO shows for free streaming (shoutouts to /r/HailCorporate), and I'm wondering if people really drank whiskey like is pictured in the show. (Constantly).

It's not the fact that they drank so much, cause I am a barstool regular and can believe that, but more the fact that I once saw a History Channel show saying that these folks (circa 1868) mostly drank what we would call "girly drinks" that if I remember correctly often contained an egg and fizzy ingredients.

BTW don't ever try and go shot for shot with a television character over 4 hours because you will lose.

Anyone know which movies were popular in Czechoslovakia around 1989/1990?

I'm doing a research project on Czechoslovakian film, and I'm trying to find out which movies were popular after the Velvet Revolution. I'm curious what the Czechs were watching! Any type of film, whether it's American, Czech, or French, anything that was popular at the time among Czechoslovakians. Thanks for the help!

What did people of ages past wear to protect themselves from rain?

Let's say I'm a travelling merchant, with no looted life anywhere and generally living off of each day's profits as they were. All my wares are in the large baggage I carry on my back.

Now, encountering rain would hardly be ideal in such livelihood especially if my goods were vulnerable to water damage.

What would I have to protect myself and my goods from rain, pre-umbrella?

Seeking shelter certainly is a logical first step but I want to know what other methods people had of preparing for the rainy days.

How did the Thirty Years War begin, and what are some of the casualty estimates for it?

Was reading an IR book called "How the World Works" by Russell Bova, and he says:

The cost of that war was very high. As many as 400,000 soldiers and millions of civilians perished. One estimate is that the population of Germany fell 69 percent, from 13 million to 4 million, and of 35,000 villages in Bohemia, only 6,000 remained after the war.

While I realize this may be reductionist in that "Germany" was hard to define, I also realized I don't know much about the cause of the war, the belligerents, or what the casualties were. Help?

Also, he sources "Peace and War: Armed Conflicts and International Order 1648-1949" by Kalevi J. Holsti for the claim.

I am writing a persuasive/argumentative grade 12 term paper on Beethoven, and I'm having trouble zeroing in on a thesis. Any ideas on something I can have a position on?

The essay is for a European History course and the essay has to be about something around 1815-1945, and I am interested in classical music so I thought I would discuss Beethoven (it doesn't hurt that my teacher is a fan of Beethoven). I was originally considering comparing Beethoven with other composers, i.e. saying something like "Beethoven would be nothing without x" (I suppose Haydn/Mozart might work) or "x would be nothing without Beethoven". My only qualms are that the first option veers out of 1815-1945, and the second is almost too easy to argue given how influential Beethoven is/was.

So, I'm wondering if anyone can help me choose something to discuss/argue regarding Beethoven. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How come Hannibal is seen as the biggest threat to early Rome rather than the sack by the Gauls in 390BC?

Is this just a modern opinion or one the ancients shared? Most people learn about Hannibal at the gates and the threat to Rome but the sack by the Gauls never really comes up?

How did the labor unions of the 19th and 20th centuries deteriorate to their current state of today?

My current understanding is that the labor unions that arose during and after the Industrial Revolution quickly grew to powerful organizations that heavily defined the working environments of their time. What factors drove their decline to their present-day representations?

Was there a class of Spartan soldier who lived among the Helots as a spy, post rebellion.

I remember being fascinated with this idea. I believe they were called the Crypteria (if I am spelling that correctly.) They were soldiers who lived secretly among the Helots after the worst slave rebellion. I think the idea was they would assassinate any Helots that could possibly be leaders of a future rebellion. If anyone can remember what this is I will be eternally grateful.

How were non sour dough breads made before commercial yeast packets

according to wikipedia, non sour dough breads existed long before commercial yeast packets, but they are a little vague on the how they were made. almost all modern recipes call for the little yeast packets. This might be kind of an odd question, and maybe not the right subreddit so I appologize if I done goofed, I just realized I really don't know much of anything about the history one of the main staples of civilization, i.e. bread.

Historically, how accurate was the rapper Nas on his song "I Can," especially with regards to Africa as a bastion of education? (lyrics inside)

I will spare you the entire song - I'm specifically referring to this section, where he's talking about African history:

Be, be'fore we came to this country

We were kings and queens, never porch monkeys

There was empires in Africa called Kush

Timbuktu, where every race came to get books

To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans

Asian, Arabs and gave them gold when

Gold was converted to money it all changed

Money then became empowerment for Europeans

The Persian military invaded

They heard about the gold, the teachings and everything sacred

Africa was almost robbed naked

Slavery was money, so they began making slave ships

Egypt was the place that Alexander the great went

He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces

Shot off [sic] they nose to impose what basically

Still goes on today, you see

I know he confused Alexander the Great with Napoleon about shooting off the nose of the Sphinx, but other than that, how would you grade him?

Was Africa really the bastion of knowledge he claims it was, with Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Asians flocking to Africa to learn and even acquire (seemingly proprietary) books?

Was Africa basically "robbed naked" by the Persian military?

Was gold really not used as money in Africa prior to the Europeans?

Obligatory link to the part of the song I'm referencing.

How did Japan hope to subjugate and control all of Asia in WW2?

Japan is such a small country compared with the rest of the area it attempted to control. How would Japan ever effectively rule and control China let alone the rest of South East Asia?

Can someone explain this to me? It seems like a major over extension from the beginning.

As the question says, hopefully someone can help me - I have two different sources on French military expenditure during the interbellum period but for the life of me I can't compare the two as they're in two completely different currencies. If anyone can point a way to answer, it would be greatly appreciated.

It would also be nice to have some more clarity regarding Lincoln's moral stance regarding race and the slavery issue.

Early Christianity and Suicide

I had an instructor who said something along the lines that the church did not really condemn suicide until after some mass suicides at some point in history (middle ages iirc). I have found the following which states something similar:

"The first Christian to publicly denounce suicide as a sin was St. Augustine in the 4th Century. The basis of Augustine’s condemnation was the ubiquitous acts of suicide among Christians."

http://crouchfoundation.org/history-of-suicide.html

I am not suggesting that that link is a good source (this is why I come to you), and my prof was a philosophy prof (not history), but I thought I would ask - is it accurate to say there was a lot of suicide from the group around Augustine's time? How likely is it that he was responding to such a situation? What was the early christian stance on suicide (pre compared to post Augustine)?
