When archeologists first discovered dinosaur bones, how the did world react?

I would think Darwin's "Origin of the Species" help contribute to the acceptance of large beast roaming the earth but then again I'm not even sure when Dinosaurs were first theorized. It must have been pretty jarring to discover bones of creatures so different from what was in the wild.

"Being sold down the river"- what was the base of this phase? Were sugar cane plantations worse than cotton ones?

In popular books set in antebellum South slaves often fear "being sold down the river"- I've thought it was just a figure of speech, but some time ago I've read article claiming that conditions in the sugar cane plantations were much worse than in cotton ones. The arguments claim that sugar cane was more profitable than cotton so slave could make profit in shorter term of time, so there were treated as "disposable goods". Is it actually true?

Uh, so awkward question, but were ancient greeks familiar with the sexual position of "spit-roasting"?

I'm reading Acharnians by Aristophanes and am at the part where a Megarian dresses his daughters up as piglets. Now obviously piglets were ancient greek slang for female genitles, and at one point in the translation i am reading, which the main character is bartering for the pigs, the line is said "the flesh of my sows will be excellent on the spit" is the joke here that his daughters may be eaten, or is it a reference to the sexual position, due to the joke about piglets.

Thanks

Following Alexander The Great's death, who had the most legitimate claim as his 'successor'?

As the title says, who had the strongest claim to be called Alexander's successor? I know how his empire was split following his death, into the Ptolemies, Seleucids etc, but which of these could call themselves Alexander's 'heirs' or 'successors'?

Can anybody tell me about this uniform (possibly WWI-era)?

I came across this photograph in a tin of my great-grandfather's old photos. I am hoping someone might be able to identify the era/military branch of the man in the photo.

He served with the King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) between 1915 and 1918 and I think that it is him. However, there are no names or anything attached to the photo, so I am looking for other clues that could help me figure out who this guy is.

Cheers!

During the Vietnam War, were Vietnamese people aware that many Americans didn't want our Military over there?

Okay, while the Vietnam war was going, I here that many people over there didn't want us there. And a lot of people over here were having anti-war protests and trying to pull our military out, because they thought we had no business being there. So my question for all of you out there, did anyone in Vietnam realize many U.S. citizens didn't even want our government interfering over there?

How accurate is it to refer to the Cold War as WWIII?

It's referred to as a war, and it certainly spanned the globe. There were even "hot flashes" like Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan.

What's stopping the decades long conflict from being referred to as World War III?
