I checked the books list and it didn't seem to have what I was looking for.

So these are photos of my great grandfather during the Russian Civil War. As far as I have been told, he was part of the British air force and he was a war-photographer. He apparently took tonnes of footage of the British intervention, which was taken by a film studio by the name of "united films" or something along those lines back in the 1930s to make a film out of, but that was the last my family ever saw of that footage.
Now the question is, from these photos, is it possible to tell what rank or position he held from them? Is it possible to tell where they were taken? According to family members, they were taken in a place called Archangel or something like that? Is it possible to confirm that location in these photos at all? Also anyone have a clue what he is holding in pictures 6, 7 and 8?
Don't know if this is the right sub at all, but I've been curious about these photos ever since I've seen them.

For the sake of keeping it manageable lets stick to Northern Europe (England, France, Scandinavia, Germanic Countries) and from the time of the Newfoundland fishing fleets forward ( Early 1500s).

The things I have learned from reading, documentaries, and school make it seem like European Colonialism is the primary reason Africa is in the terrible state it is in right now. I wanted to question the accuracy of how much European Colonialism truly negatively impacted Africa.

This weekly feature is a place to discuss new developments in fields of history and archaeology. This can be newly discovered documents and archaeological sites, recent publications, documents that have just become publicly available through digitization or the opening of archives, and new theories and interpretations.

As far as I can tell, Russia and Belarus seem completely distinct culturally, ethnically, and linguistically from the Scandinavian nations. However, I often hear that the Rus are descendants of Norsemen. How did this theory arise, and what lends it credibility?

The movie Argo is notoriously inaccurate, like its silly ending chase scene. But I was wondering if the movie guys had a reason to explicitly portray the Canadians as getting the credit for the rescue while only playing a supporting role. What do we know?

I am looking for a podcast about New Zealand history. I have family who've emigrated to there, and I'd like to know more about their new country.
Thanks in advance.

What I mean is, I read that Stalin's collectivization of farmland in post WWI soviet union led to almost 15 million deaths. I am EXTREMELY skeptical of this number because it seems high. Like, way too high. Am I right in my belief of number inflation of deaths, or am I completely wrong and Stalin did in fact lead to more deaths than WWII did?

When the US put a man on the moon it was a big thing in the US and for the west in general. But how was it in Russia. Did people feel a sense of pride outside Russia in the other USSR states or did they care much at all?
As we in west thought it was "cool" and what not when the US landed a man on the moon, but it didn't give raise to any special national pride of being a westerner etc.

Have there been female explorers who sailed for example to America and found new land? Or were their only male explorers/captains like Columbus, Magellan, Vespucci, ...?

I used to be under the impression that Qin Shi Huang's uniting of the Chinese kingdoms was a huge milestone in Chinese history and a great achievement. However in his book 'China: A History' John Keay downplays the first emperor's conquests, stating that his father laid most of the groundwork and that the idea of a single dominant dynasty wasn't unprecedented (like the supposed Zhou dynasty). Does this ring true?

Hi, I'm looking for a podcast series (à la Brief History of Mathematics, but more in-depth) on the big industrialists like Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Hughes. Are there any specific ones I can listen to? Thanks

Ie, if I was a soldier in a regiment of line infantry or an archer firing at a group of enemy troops, would I pick out an enemy soldier to shoot at or would I just shoot in the enemy's general direction? If I had to guess I'd wager it was the later, as this would give a more even distribution of projectiles. But I've never heard of this side of tactics so I'm curious as to what the case is.
