How did post WW1 Germany manage to violate the treaty of Versailles and build a new military force without any consequences.

I read that the Germans military was limited to 100,000 after WW1 so how did post war Germany under Hitlers rule manage to make military service mandatory and build a new military without anyone stopping them?

What is a good TV channel that shows good History Documentaries?

I was just stroling through my TV channels and I saw something about The Knights Templar on the History Channel. There was only 10 minutes left in this 2 hour documentary so I couldn't really watch it. I don't care much about the Templars, but I really love watching documentaries about medieval Europe and Rome. So I went through the history channels upcoming programming for the next week and there is not another documentary of any kind. Every show is American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and shows like that. I remember like 5 years ago there was always awesome documentaries on the history channel. It just sucks I can't find any on TV anymore

Why were Japanese soldiers so willing to commit suicide during WWII?

What caused them to be so radical that they saw kamikaze fighting as effective/viable form of attack. Did it have to do anything with the Bushido code? Where did their fanaticism come from?

Ancient battle grounds like Cannae, Salamis, Thermopylae, Trebia, Teutoburg Forest: Shouldn't these areas be absolutely littered with skeletons, weapons, armor, etc? Or WAS this the case but the areas in question have just been excavated already?

With some of the high casualty battles, I wonder why there isn't just hundreds of thousands of artifacts at these areas. I am not talking about finding a pot or old furnace at an excavation site; I mean THOUSANDS of soldiers died in these battles. Why is there relatively little proof?

I recently came across a website claiming (due to previously unreleased documents) that Hitler moved to Argentina after the war. How plausible is this?

http://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/new-book-claims-hitler-retired-to-argentina-after-making-a-secret-escape-from-crumbling-nazi-empire.html

A friend of mine posted this to me. I don't particularly believe it but it would be interesting to see what /r/AskHistorians thinks regarding it's veracity.

Apologies if his is the wrong subreddit.

When were revolutions first called revolutions?

Obviously we now see these as a big change in government and system, but would this distinction of what a political revolution have started with the French Revolution where the system did more or less go full circle?

How often did heads of state (Hitler, Churchill, Stalin) visit the front lines in WW2?

In Guderian's "Panzer Leader" he mentions early on that Hitler visited the front less and less frequently as the war dragged on and "by doing so he lost contact with the feelings of the troops." Is this true of other heads of state?

What would an economics student in the USSR have been taught?

So far as I can tell, the content of an economics undergraduate degree in the west has been fairly stable for several decades or more - a combination of neoclassical economics (Jevons, Walras, Menger) and Keynesian (including Hicks, Philips) macroeconomics, and more recently some criticism of the latter (Friedman). Would an economics education in the USSR have included much the same things, would it have focused on Marxist economics as laid out in Das Kapital, or would it have been something else entirely?

How much did Woodrow Wilson affect the future of American foreign policy?

While reading about Woodrow Wilson, I often see many authors writing about how revolutionary his foreign policy was. I see mentions of internationalism, self-determination, idealism, and advancing the causes of democracy.

Just how revolutionary were the Wilsonian ideals when compared to his predecessors? Are we still seeing the effects of his foreign policies today? If possible, I would like to see some specific events or policies that demonstrate just how important or different his foreign policy was. Thanks!

When and how did the 7-days-per-week system became universal?

I was wondering how did the modulus 7 system has became internationally acknowledged. Which other weekly system were used prior (and parallel) to this system, and are still some of those systems in use today (like the use of Islamic and Jewish calendars).

I know the 7 days week is taken from Genesis 1, after the Seven days of Creation. The seventh day is called "Sabbath" which means rested\ceased to work in Hebrew. As in that day god has completed his work and stopped to gaze in awe upon his creation. 7 is a Typological number which held significance in early cultures.

Yet I am all around clueless about other weekly systems used in different cultures, such as pre-Christian Rome or eastern civilizations. were there any attempts to install a 6 days system to go side by side with other time measuring units (24 hours, 12 months, 60 seconds and (originally) 360 days)?

[Homework] Why the "US won" WWII (ex-post from /r/Homeworkhelp)

I know the question is pretty loaded and I am re-writing it to "Why the allies won WWII"

This is for a final paper that was just thrown at us last minute. One of the major portions I need help on is we have to incorporate an understanding of the timeline of the war.

My thesis as it stands is: The Allies won the war because of their relentless manufacturing, the superior cooperation between allies, and the geographical barriers that protected not only the US, but Britain.

Do you guys have any specific facts that I could bolster my argument with?
