Was Jesus trying to reform the Jewish faith as opposed to trying to begin a new religion?

I took a humanities class at my university a couple of years back, and I recall my professor saying that Jesus was a, "Jewish guy trying to reform his church. Is this true? I was under the impression for a long time that Jesus was indeed beginning a new religion.

Thanks

Why are there so many names for Germany?

In English, it's called "Germany," and in German, it's "Deutschland," while in Arabic, it's "Almania." In some instances, linguistically similar languages - like Dutch - refer to Germany with a similar name, while some variation on "Almania" is popular with Middle Eastern and African languages. Why are there all these different names? Are there other countries that have a similar outcome when their names are translated?

Why is von Manstein generally considered to be the best WW2 general?

That's a sentiment that I've come across in my weeks of Google-fu. I have the feeling that people overrate him because other people underrate him (especially when Rommel is brought up).

I don't think he's bad, I do think he's the best German general. But in terms of the sheer number of troops commanded in operations and keeping them all organised and under control and with logistical support, I'd think Zhukov or Rokossovsky or Eisenhower or Nimitz (technically an Admiral, I know) or even Marshall for his ability at picking great commanders, would be considered better military commanders.

I'm currently reading about this thing called von Manstein's Backhand Blow, but even as I go along I think Rokossovsky's Operation Bagration seems more impressive (though admittedly I can't really understand the depth and complexity of it from the Wiki article alone).

When did the "Red Carpet" become synonymous with an extravagant affair?

Pretty self explanatory, but every major event seems to have a red carpet. Is this the case worldwide, or is it an American/Western/etc. convention? When did this become the symbol that an event was something worth paying attention to?

What did the earth look like 50-55 million years ago, not long after the dinosaur extinction event?

Our ancestors were 3 or 4 inches long and living underground, lots of other small mammals and insects as well, but what about birds? Did any animals larger than a foot or two in length make it through? How long did it take the earth to recover from such a massive nuclear winter, and how did life forms thrive and grow? Thank You.

Was the forced retirement of Roman soldiers due to injury a common occurrence?

I finished my classes for the semester this morning so I decided to watch a movie I was curious about but not too heavily invested in. Netflix suggested The Eagle, which seems to be a solid "C" sword and sandals film.

In the first few scenes of the movie a Centurion takes command of a cohort in Britannia. Celts attack his garrison, which because of his decisions ends in only a handful of causalities. During this battle the centurion is badly injured in the knee and he is sent away for medical attention.

Some time later, one of the officer's below him visits. He brings news that the cohort received a Golden Laurel for their standard and the centurion in particular receives a commendation of some sort. He is also informed that he has been honorably discharged because of his injury. The centurion clearly still desires to remain in the legion. He goes on to make a full recovery after being attended by a surgeon, and the movie continues onward.

Was it common for Roman soldiers, particularly centurions, to be discharged because of an injury? Or was this simply a plot device in the movie, or perhaps in actuality he never would have recovered from such a wound outside of hollywood.

Why is it that WWII is discussed/learned/taught/more notable than WWI?

It seems that every history text that I have read focuses more intently on WWII than WWI almost as if it isn't as equally historically important.

How soon after Palestinians fled from their homes (1948) near Haifa/Jaffa did Jewish families begin to settle in those homes?

I'm currently writing a film proposal for a history class and can't quite find the dates of resettlement by Jewish families. There are good dates for the actual evacuation, but fewer for the time period of resettlement of those areas. I don't want to start a debate about right/wrong, property rights in refugee situations, it's just the dates might impact the narrative. So was it a matter of days? weeks? Months? Any help would be incredibly appreciated, thanks all.

Many popular depictions of American soldiers in Vietnam show them smoking marijuana and using heroin while deployed. But how common was drug use amongst American servicemen in theatre? And was the high command aware of this and were any measures taken to stop drug use?

I'm thinking of movies like Apocalypse now and I also have a vague recollection of a documentary showing American soldiers smoking weed through the barrel of a shotgun.

Monday Mysteries | Mysterious Religions and Cults

Previously on Monday Mysteries

**This week we'll be taking a look at religions that are outside the mainstream. Generally people know the main ones - Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc. However, what about cults and more "niche" methods of worship? What did they worship? How did they do it? Why did it never expand or become more popular than it was? This question is relatively broad, so feel free to define "cult" however you wish. So long as it involves worship, it'll be cool to hear about! Just remember - as per always on AskHistorians, just a name will not do. Go in depth :)

Remember, moderation in these threads will be light - however, please remember that politeness, as always, is mandatory. Also, if you're looking to get flair, these threads are great to use for those purposes :)

When word of Leif Erikson's discovery of a new world reached other kingdoms, why wasn't there interest in exploring that land further?

From what I read, Erikson and his followers established a small village (or villages?) in what is now Canada. Then they left due to harsh conditions, and then no European bothered to go back until Columbus.

My question is... why not? Were there no explorers who wanted to try discovering more about the New World? Were there no kingdoms that wanted to invest in scouting out resources/land?

Do we have any sources on how Adolf Hitler behaved or was seen during his time in prison(1924-1925) after trying to the top of the government by force?

I am currently learning a lot about the time when Hitler rose to power in Germany and it interests me how he was during his imprisonement. He wrote his book "Mein Kampf" and he was in prison because of a violent political coup attempt. But that's about all we got to know about that short period of time in school (Germany btw if that is from any interest). Is there anything more about this time? Did he maybe already behave agressive or offensive towards other (jewish?) inmates / wardens?

Sorry for any poor wording and thanks for any answers!
