I am a History Major who can't read between the lines! Please help!

I am a history major and I read all the sources I am given but can never grasp what the big picture is. I remember all the details of what I read, but when I go to class I get lost because I can never seem to put the pieces together of what the social implications of whats going. For instance we read up on Birmingham the other day and I knew what happened but I didn't read between the lines. When I read I didn't see that there was a struggle for control of protests between organizations. I knew that was going on, but I didn't see it in what I read.

Sorry if I don't make sense, at work typing while looking behind my shoulder.

Please help, I want to be an excellent attorney someday, that's why I chose this major. But I seem to fail at the most important aspect of law and history, reading comprehension and analysis.

What evidence is there that shows that the USS Liberty incident was an accident?

I don't think that it was an accident, but in my history class we recently watched "Dead In The Water". My teacher has assigned the class sides of the story and we're going to have a debate, and I was assigned pro-Israel. I cannot find any hard evidence showing that it was truly an accident, but I have to stay with my side.

What was Lincoln's attitude toward the Native Americans? How did he treat them during the presidency?

I have heard some rumours about Lincoln's negative opinion about the Native Americans. Unfortunately, neither Wikipedia articles nor other Reddit posts couldn't enlighten me on this particular topic. Maybe I should have searched and read more carefully but I still would like to ask my question here in the hope you will help me.

How much of this article is accurate? ("Is there any evidence for Jesus outside the Bible?" by J. Warner Wallace)

Link

I believe that Jesus existed - that's not what I'm asking. I know the consensus among historians is that he was a real guy who really probably gathered some followers and was really killed. I've even heard that there was probably a real John the Baptist too. Not being a historian myself, I'm inclined to believe the consensus of smarter people than myself on that.

What I'm wondering is how accurate this article is about the evidence for Jesus, since I was under the impression that the historical consensus was based on much fewer sources than the ones espoused by Wallace. His article lists 11 different sources (broken into "Hostile Pagan" and "Hostile Jewish" categories).

I know the history of the author, he says he was an atheist for many years before "examining the evidence for Christianity". Now he makes money by supporting the idea that Christianity is provable by making scientific examinations of historical records - naturally anything he writes with that admission of bias is suspect to begin with.

TL;DR:

  • Are all of the sources listed by Wallace credible?

  • Is it fair to call these sources "hostile"?

  • Are the conclusions reached by Wallace (conveniently summed up at the end) supportable, or are they highly flawed and/or biased?

During Caesar's conquest of Gaul he ended up taking a slew of hostages from a large number of tribes, how exactly did the system work?

I know there is a question like this one that has already been answered here but I'd like to know more details. What's the typical number of hostages a tribe would send? Who were they? Members of the nobility? Their children? Would they follow Caesar around on his campaigns or would they be stashed somewhere in Italy? How were they treated? What would happen to them if the tribe ended up crossing Caesar or Rome?

What is the context and actual importance of the near nuclear uses during after after the Cold War? To what extent were these near apocalypses versus minor hiccups in military operations?

edit: that should be "and after", not "after after" in the title.

I have often read or been told about various stories in which equipment malfunction, escalation of disagreements, or other causes have nearly lead to the potentially devastating use of nuclear weapons. People such as Stanislav Petrov and Vasili Arkhipov are mentioned as men who single-handedly prevented the destruction of the world. When seeking more information, I came accross this paper non-exaustively documenting such indicidents; they listed a total of 13 since 1962.

It has always seemed unlikely to me that the world came as close to nuclear war in these cases as it is often represented, especially given that it happened many times but ultimately nukes were never so much as launched, but many knowledgable people seem to think otherwise. Is there any consensus among historians, or are there any prominant interpretations?

Also, is there any recommended reading for a better understanding of the topic?

What was life like for the average citizen during and after the Fall of Saigon?

April 30th was apparently the fall of Saigon. I always wondered what happened to South Vietnamese in the city after the fall. My impression is that there was great clamor for Vietnamese to get visas and escape to the U.S. Were those left behind subject to great prosecution, or just party officials, or were they all pardoned? Did the quality of life plummet?

Are Tsuyoshi Hasegawa's conclusions about the Soviet's influence in triggering the Japanese surrender of WWII widely accepted or are they in dispute? If he got it wrong, how did he get it wrong?

I was off in another thread being confronted like a radical conspiracy theorist for agreeing with Hasegawa's conclusions. I was up against non-sourcing, uneducated and insulting redditors who had probably never heard of Hasegawa so the talk didn't get very far however I am genuinely curious on how Hasegawa's work has held up to critical examination.

A search on /r/askhistorians for Hasegawa only finds this two year old thread in which the highest voted comment is a non-sourced criticism that is contending that Hasegawa's "might be a compelling thesis if it didn't ignore the Potsdam Declaration" and calling for Hasegawa's work "to be put in the trash bin." Startling because even a brief look at Hasegawa's work will find that he obviously does not omit or ignore Potsdam and examines it in great detail and refers to it regularly.

So I am hopeful that AskHistorians might now provide a more substantial, informative and up-to-date answer both for myself and anyone else who searches for his name on this subreddit in the months and years to come. Thank you.

was it that knowledge of the Vikings' discovery of America didn’t spread or just that people didn’t realize the land they'd discovered was actually the edge of a giant continent so nobody viewed it as significant? if the former why didn’t it spread?

Where there any followers of Hades or temples built in his name?

AFAIK, there are no temples dedicated to Hades. But with death being such a key part of Ancient Greek culture, I cannot imagine one of the big three gods being so ignored.

How much of the stereotype of Asians as "slanty eyes" can be attributed to 70% of Asians needing glasses?

Recently occurred to me when i looked in the mirror this morning when i noticed that without my glasses i look like i plan to murder some-one's first born child. With them i look like a regular human being. I also recall that apparently 70% of Asians will need glasses or some other vision correcting method and was wondering if the stereotype could be attributed to an inherent genetic trait.

Unless it was a deliberate attempt at propaganda and highly focusing and emphasizing certain physical traits

How was it possible that Jewish people built the Pyramids, but the last Pyramid was around 1764–1759 BCE, but the oldest part of the Old Test. was written in 1400 BCE

I have no clue why conventional wisdom holds that Jewish people built the Pyramids of Egypt, when in fact, the oldest portion of the OT was written almost 400 years after the most recent pyramid.

This isn't intellectually honest or sound to explain history like this. Perhaps a people from East of Egypt - modern day Israel and surrounding areas - were enslaved to build the Pyramids (or a pyramid) as were people to the South and West of Giza. And the narrative that Jews built it came many centuries later.

There's supposedly some heiroglyphs of Jewish babies being fed to aligators in Egypt, and we know that they're Jewish because they are circumcised. However, even the Egyptians were circumcising their males!

Please give me your opinion or insights to this matter.
