Why didn't Canada join American during the Revolution? Were there any movements in Canada to join the USA?

Wasn't Canada put through the same things as America? No taxation without repisantation and what not.

I would also assume that some Canadians wanted the same freedom from Britain, so did they have a movement, or did they just flock to America?

Help me r/AskHistorians, you're my only hope (a series of questions on Al Capone's historical impact)

I am currently a student in Ohio and am writing a research paper on the effect of Al Capone on the American crime syndicate and public views of these syndicates. I need to get an interview in about Capone but my paper is due in 5 days and I am running our of time. I had an interview lined up with the historian who wrote what I considered to be the most informative book that I read during the course of my research but he bailed on me. So I am asking /r/AskHistorians for help.

I cut down my list of questions so that if would be more concise and direct, if any of you could answer any of these questions for me that would be great (when answering please include your name and relevant positions/knowledge basis e.g. Professor at University of X so that I can cite you in my paper, I can simply attribute your help to the reddit -hive-mind if you would prefer but specifics would obviously lend the most credibility to it).

  1. I know that Capone's eccentric personality caused him to talk to the media so much but did he receive any sort of physical benefit from the habit. In other words, was there any real logic to giving himself over to the media?

  2. Capone was seen very differently by those that knew him personally and those that did not, surely the people that knew him much has spoke about his "good character" to their friend though, which would increase the range of those that viewed him as more than being a scourge upon the Earth. Just where on the spectrum between "Uncle Al" and "Scarface" did he fall for the general public? How did this change before and after being named "Public Enemy Number 1"?

  3. Today Eliot Ness is credited with bringing down Capone but his name appears in no newspaper headlines from the time and is only mentioned tangentially in the articles themselves. When and why did the public perception of Ness change?

  4. How important was it that Capone was the one leading his organization, was he especially good at it or would anyone else have worked? Essentially, how good was Capone at his job?

  5. How much did other criminals at the time model themselves after Capone? Did other crime bosses try and emulate him? How about lower ranking criminals?

  6. What sort of lasting (to today) impact did Capone have on Bootlegging? On Organized Crime? On how we fight crime? On Alcohol in general?

  7. Is there any other information you think I should have?

In WWII, the RAF apparently feared that the Luftwaffe would employ pressurized high altitude bombers like the Ju 86 that could fly higher than any of the RAF's fighters. Why didn't the Germans do this?

I was reading about the Spitfire variants and saw that the Spitfire Mark V's development was apparently rushed due to fears that the Ju 86 pressurized bomber could fly higher than any of the British interceptors of the time.

I hadn't heard of the Ju 86 being employed in combat so I looked up the ceiling and sure enough, it was extremely high, around 42 000 feet. This is higher than all but the latest Spitfires, which kind of begs the question of why didn't the Luftwaffe do this? Also seems strange that they would have used He 111s and Ju 88s in the original battle, with their low service ceilings, when they had the alternative to use aircraft that could fly this high (the Ju 86 had been in development considerably earlier than 1940)

Was bomber production not a high enough priority? In my research some high level Luftwaffe officials like Adolf Galland claimed they were always fighting uphill when arguing for increased fighter production, and that bomber production was the priority even into 1942 and 1943 when you'd assume fighters would be the focus.

Any clarification on this would be helpful, including whether the premises are actually true or not. Thanks!

Why didn't the USA force Emperor Hirohito to abdicate in 1945 the way Kaiser Wilhelm II had been made to in 1918?

I know that technically the Kaiser abdicated due to factors inside Germany, but Wilson's 14 points made it clear that he would have been forced from the throne anyway if he had chosen not to

Why didn't the Habsburgs and Hohenzollerns intermarry?

The Habsburgs gained a lot of their lands through marriage to the point of having an empire where the sun never set. I can imagine that one of the reasons why they didn't marry the Hohenzollerns could be that they were protestant, I'm not sure if the Habsburgs have any protestant members of their family( I doubt it, but you never know), but once Prussia became a considerable power, wouldn't it have been in the Habsburg interest to bring Prussia into the fold through marriage. Did they ever forgive Prussia for Silesian episodes?

How did proslavery individuals in Europe and the United States respond to the beginnings of the white Abolitionist movement?

With my modern eyes I cannot fathom how proslavery people thought that owning slaves was okay if they were familiar with the concept of human rights. Did proslavery people largely ignore human rights arguments, or did they have a special reason why those rights shouldn't apply to enslaved individuals?

What primary religion did Ethiopia and Liberia have during the European Imperialism era?

I think the era is 1850ish-1914.

I know Ethiopia was officially Christian since 330AD but what about Liberia?

I haven't been able to find good sources for Liberia but apparently they had a strong Christian heritage as well.

Can anyone confirm Liberia's religious background by the end of 1914?
