What was the aftermath of the Oka Crisis in Canada?

The wikipedia page offers excellent factual commentary of what occurred but nothing to do with whether it altered relations between the Canadian government and the nation's aboriginal groups, nor about any changes in understanding or legislation between the two parties. Also, did its handling undermine Quebec to anglophone Canadians?

How was Protestantism able to go from a nascent religious movement in 1517 to a military power by the Thirty Years' War, only a hundred years later?

Could the Catholic Church have done more to quash it from the outset?

How did the Protestant rulers of the Thirty Years' War come to be Protestant?

Would the average Catholic ruler of the time (i.e. no more pious than any other) have considered Protestant rulers to be anathema or would they have not cared?

How was France's intervention in the war on the side of the Protestants received domestically and by the Catholic Church? Were there any religious repercussions for France's rulers (civil unrest or threats of excommunication)? Were France's presumably Catholic nobility generally supportive of this decision?

Historiography Help (Cambodian-Vietnam War/Third Indochina War)

Hi, I was wondering whether anyone might have some good sources in mind pertaining to the precipitants leading up to the Third Indochina War (Pol Pot's war on Vietnam). Since Cambodia is still a very murky subject and tends to be overshadowed by the Vietnam War, I'm having a difficult time finding solid sources outside of Chandler, Kiernan, and the Phnom Penh Post. Any help offered would be most appreciated!

What happened in the western portion of the Pacific theater during WWII?

Almost all history books that entail information on the war, or the Pacific theater, mention the US' island-hopping strategy and the eventual Soviet invasion of Manchuria/Korea. However, what isn't touched on, that I've seen, is what happened in the western portions of the theater? How were the Japanese expelled, or were they simply standing guard while the rest of the front fell apart?

For our purposes, let's say the area in question is East-Central China and SE Asia.

Can someone explain what "Bismarckian diplomacy" entails like I'm 12 years old?

It's often said that Otto Von Bismarck was a brilliant diplomat and statesman. But I'm often confused what was so innovative or clever about the things he did. What hat tricks or strategies did he use to win the global diplomacy game? Why did Germany slip into isolation/ become a pariah with Bismarck gone?

Shakespeare has had an enormous influence on English speech; are there other authors that have had similar influences on other languages?

The list of words and phrases coined by Shakespeare that we use in common language today is pretty enormous. It probably even rivals the list of words and phrases coined in the King James translation of the Bible. Are there authors in other languages, who have had such an impact on that language's common speech?

Why did cheese never become prominent in Asian diets?

Considering its long shelf life, portability, and nutrients, it seems like a food that should have been popular wherever livestock was possible.

It feels like it would have been very useful to armies in particular since you couldn't expect to live off the land with large amounts of troops for long periods of time.

Could slaves be granted habeas corpus?

i'm working on a paper, trying to dissect and understand the relationship between Agamben's state of exception and 3 specific instances of legal "othering", prisoners in guantanamo, undocumented citizens, and slaves- using habeas corpus as a lens. Can somebody give me some perspective on if slaves were able to use habeas corpus ever? I've searched jstor, lexisnexis and good old google and i'm coming up pretty short. Thanks!

Sources on Social Darwinist Views of the Poor

I need a concise source available online for an exercise in class today. I'm having my students read through a set of documents dealing with social Darwinism (among other things), and I really want to highlight the contradictions within it. In particular, I need a source that shows how social Darwinist were afraid of racial degeneration due to the poor's proclivity to procreate (which obviously calls into question the whole notion of social Darwinism, since the idea is that it's natural that the "fittest" would be most successful is reproducing; if the poor are reproducing more, that suggests that the social Darwinists' definitions of "fitness" are the problem).

So, any fairly short, online sources for fears about the poor or the supposed fitness of the middle classes would be really helpful.
