Why was it that Wagner's music was singled out and banned in Israel at one time, and still has a strong social stigma, because of his anti-Semitic views?

Wagner was far from being the only anti-Semitic artist of the times. Why was it that he specifically received such cultural backlash and do you think music and art is necessarily linked to the ideology of its creator?

The spread of Sunni Islam into modern day Indonesia.

Just a little context: One of my favorite things to do is play Europa Universalis5 which is a great historical knowledge well I can draw from everyday (even though you can partake in some hilarious historically inaccurate gameplay).

In east Asia, the nations of Aceh and Brunei are depicted as adherents of Sunni Islam, but I was wondering if this is actually accurate. Indonesia is very far away from mainland Asia and the spread of Islam as I know it focused on mainly westward expansion. How did Islam reach Indonesia historically?

Why did Sumerian votive figures have such hilariously huge eyes?

I've seen photographs of votive figures from Sumer, and while I probably shouldn't be amused by their giant googly eyes - I most certainly am. What purpose or symbolism did such caricatured eyes serve, or was it just the style at the time, as far as we know? It looks like it's trying to represent highly dilated pupils.

Examples:

Other background information on the purposes and styles of votive figures would be welcomed too :)

The Spanish Civil War drew tens of thousands of others to Spain to fight a war so very far from home. What were these men fighting for?

I've recently become really interested in the Spanish Civil War and have been really confused about the amount of foreign people who went to fight in the war and why.

Third Reich & World War II Historians, what can you tell me about my grandfather?

Hello, this is my first post on Reddit. I have read the rules of this sub and I hope this falls within them.

http://imgur.com/a/hyG1k

This is my grandfather, who I know nothing about. Asking my parents, the only information I have been able to gather is that he beat my grandmother, left his family when my mother was born, and died before the war ended. I believe these to be the only photos of him in their house.

It's clearly a touchy subject with them; I am here looking for information about his uniform, what role he may have played in the war, and maybe even a translation of the writing on the back of the prints.

In the high middles ages it seems like towns such as Beaune and Dijon get royal charters to become self-governing. Once they received these royal charters were they completely free of control by dukes, barons or other lords?

How accurate is the claim that Napoleon was the "French Fuhrer"?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1038453/The-French-Fuhrer-Genocidal-Napoleon-barbaric-Hitler-historian-claims.html

This article tells of Napoleon's supposed genocide in Haiti, and compares him to Hitler. I'm aware that this is still a matter of debate, since Napoleon wasn't anti-Semitic like the article says and other reasons, but I was wondering if there is any evidence of Napoleon committing genocide beyond what the article presents.

Looking for a pre-20th century American "socialist" from Louisiana.

I remember learning in AP US History about a guy from Louisiana (I want to say 1800s) who advocated some radical tax policy of wealth redistribution. I don't remember him describing himself as a socialist, but his idea surely was heavily redistributionist. I'm sure there were many figures like this, but I guess this one is famous enough to be in an AP US History textbook. Anyone know who he was? Thanks.

Whaling and its depiction in Moby Dick

Melville goes to great lengths in chapters 24 and 25 to describe the achievements of whaling. Some of his claims include whaling ships being greater heroes of expedition than Cook or Krusenstern, being the first commerce to round cape horn, the settling of Australia, and the transport of the first missionaries to the polynesian islands.

Are there merits to the praise of whaling ships given by Melville or is this him taking a bit of poetic license to further the story?

Have there always been musical virtuosos?

The virtuosic talents of figures like J.S. Bach, Franz Liszt, Paganini and so forth were famous in their day. Did that level of skill exist in any other societies farther back than the 1600's? Are there any old names that are well known?

During the founding of Islam, what part of the Abrahamic religious texts were used?

It is often said that followers of Islam also use parts of the Torah and revere Jesus as a prophet. But during the proto-Islamic period what "religion" would we consider the Prophet Muhammad and his followers? Were they Jews? Were they Christians? Were they something in-between? I have always been curious.

I read an article today (link in text) about how Lincoln tried to take control of a silver mine in California in the midst of the civil war. The article claims that this move almost led to the secession of California from the Union. Did this issue have as much importance the article claims it does?

http://www.examiner.com/article/when-abraham-lincoln-tried-to-take-almaden-quicksilver-county-park?cid=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

I just live near the area of the silver mine and am interested in the subject. Can anyone who knows a lot about the events during the US Civil War confirm/deny this article and give/point me to more information about California's role in the civil war? Anything specifically about the San francisco Bay Area's role in the civil war would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a productive day!

recommended reading on the Central African Republic?

With the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, there's been increased discussion of the current situation in the CAR -- but I'm having trouble finding good histories of the region (preferably 1950-present) to put the current violence in context. Help?

I'm in the middle of Martin Meredith's The Fate of Africa, which has some information, but not a great deal. I'm looking for something relatively entry-level; while I have some basic knowledge of central Africa, I'm looking for something more accessible than scholarly work on post-colonial Central Africa (and with more context than Amnesty International reports).
