That's the line I often hear from my friends and families. Do you have any recommendations what to say to disprove Atlantis' existence? Book suggestions maybe?
And question related to post title, really, why those people spend a lot of their time and money to prove existence of Atlantis?? Most of them are not historians. Who gave them the money?

What was it like after the capital moved to Constantinople? Did classes of citizenship like cives romani, latini, socii, etc prevail? Did people in the outskirt of the empire still classify as citizens?

Hi AskHistorians.
I have to do a 5-6 page double spaced paper on a single architectural element, style, or something similar. I chose domes as my first paper was solely on the Pantheon and I have some background/idea on the importance of the dome. Yes it's extremely easy and short assignment but I have yet to find a singular book that details the evolution of the use of domes in architecture (mainly looking for Pantheon, early AD to Islamic mosques).
The best book I have found is "The Dome: A Sutdy in the History of Ideas" by E. Baldwin Smith, but I have skimmed its contents and it doesn't seem to dedicate even a small portion for the Pantheon, which to my understanding is an extremely important architectural accomplish in the Roman Empire, so maybe it isn't as thorough as I would like. Or I guess I'm dumb and overemphasizing its importance.
The history section of Domes on Wikipedia is pretty much want I want except in book form and that's where I found the book I listed above.
Any general book recommendations? I attend a large university and I think I would be able to find obscure architecture books.
Thanks in advance.

Earlier in the war we see fighters with camo, like the P-40, P-47C, P-38G, but by late war they're all unpainted - iconic images of the P-51D, P-47D, P-38L are all unpainted silver finish. Isn't this a significant disadvantage?

My friend and I were having an interesting argument about the compilation of the Quran, especially on the topic of Muhammad's advice to memorize the verses as he told them to the faithful. We were wondering why exactly the order was given to memorize; we assumed that while the layperson listening to Muhammad wouldn't know how to read or write, as he was a merchant there must have been a scribe among them to record the matters, as he would any transaction.
Were there scribes among the Arab (or perhaps they aren't quite Arabs yet) traders? Was there anyone recording the Quran during its initial oral recitation? How exactly did we get the modern Quran from all those codices that were written and why exactly did Abu Bakr (or the other chap who's name currently escapes me) destroy them?

We've been smelting copper, bronze, iron, even steel for a long, long time. But why are steel structures such a relatively modern invention? I could see how it wouldn't be cost effective? But there's plenty of monumental architecture where vanity came before cost...

For example; would the British create a regiment in Massachusetts Colony to then be sent to fight in France?

I recall reading that the Americans were originally only interested in buying New Orleans from the French, and were confounded when the French offered them the entirety of what remains of their territory in North America, which then led to the doubling of the size of the USA. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that on average, the Louisiana purchase cost about a few cents per acre of land.
Why did Napoleon agree to such a sale? Couldn't he at least have raised the price of the land to get more profit?

I always wondered if there were any other historical records of public expectations via crucifixion aside from the New Testament's description of Christ's death, and if this was something fairly common in early history. If there was, were others also required to carry a cross?

Do most scholars believe the Acts of the Apostles to be a reliable historical record of the early church? I have heard people suggest that the intent was to draw together the figureheads of different factions in early Christianity and create some kind of apostolic continuity going back to Jerusalem.

FEMA was formed 1979, but before that, was there a certain agency that handled natural disasters? Did the federal government just send monetary aid to the state governments and let them handle it?

Have there been any historical books/article written about PTSD and the psycological effects following WW2 of Nazi SS soldiers and Gestapo?
I would think a number of SS soldiers and Gestapo would've suffered some effects of PTSD after often taking part in or overseeing mass killings of many unarmed women, children and men, I just wondered if there was anything historical written about the topic.

I know next to nothing about the french involvement but read in an answer in another thread by /u/DonaldFDraper that tactics and strategies were used developed by french military theorists. So I wonder, how much material, supplies, tactical schooling have the french poured into the war of independence? Did they hope to weaken England this way?

So I was reading the post about the earliest recorded names and I realised that most ancient names place the family name before the given name. Was there any reason as to why we reversed the order? Also when did this change occur and why?

Obviously there is never an election in which everyone is happy, but I can't imagine the outrage today if a president entered a third or fourth term. I understand the circumstances surrounding his reelection, but I doubt everyone did. Today people would question the constitutionality and attack it as tyranny. Whenever I hear about FDR I have never heard about the reception of his later terns. Thank you!
Edit: Thank you for the replies! I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my original post, but I was not questioning the constitutionality of Roosevelt's reelections. I know that it was constitutional at the time and, personally, I would have no problem with his reelection. I was only inquiring about the reception and how vocal and prominent the certain opposition was.

I don't mean how accurate the bible is in general, rather how accurate it is with the story of this mysterious man Jesus and the events surrounding his popularity and later Crucifixion. Had the Romans kept some record of the events? Surely they must have documented all high profile executions, and their reasoning behind them.
Over the ages the bible has been somewhat romanticized, and a great level of mysticism added to it. What kind of a man Jesus really was, who his followers were and what they believed in is really hard to understand now considering how the bible is the best known and most accepted documentation of the events.

I read somewhere that starting in 1936, strict quotas were enforced stating that no more than 10% of a university's student body could be female, due to the Nazi attitude that a woman's place was in the home, being a mother and wife. What kind of woman went to college under the Nazi regime? Was it only the very wealthy? Did women from other countries ever travel to Germany to study during this period (as Classicist Edith Hamilton did 40 years before)? Were there limits as to what they could study? What difficulties would the average female student encounter as they pursued their degree during this time?
