Has there ever been a serious attempt at assassinating a US Supreme Court Justice?

It seems to me that there could be strong political motivations because they serve for life.

How did America create such a successful and stable democracy in such a short time?

Modern countries like Russia, Mexico, and Nigeria are having extreme difficulty in leading a democratic form of government. Mexico specifically took almost a hundred years to transition to a liberal democracy. How come America's government turned out so successful in a matter of decade or two?

Why didn't we go to war with Iran in 1979?

After the US Embassy in Tehran was raided, wouldn't that have been considered an act of war? Isn't an embassy sovereign territory?

What was this piece of metal (found on a Texas ranch) used for?

Last week, with the help of findagrave.org, I located the graves of my fourth great-grandparents, which just happened to be located on some private property in Caldwell County, Texas. The owner of the land was very courteous, let me see the graves, and gave me this rusty object resembling a belt buckle, which he said "my ancestors probably touched" and that he found it on the ground on his ranch.

I doubt it belonged to my ancestors, since the ones in question only lived in Texas for less than 10 years, but I would still like to know: What was this object used for, and about how old is it?

How many times did we come close to nuclear war during the Cold War?

I keep reading about incidents where tensions or mechanical mishaps almost lead to nuclear hostilities between the USSR and the USA, and would like to ask for as comprehensive of a list as possible detailing instances where the two nations came close to annihilation.

I've heard it said that before the concept of teenagers arose, you were a child or you were an adult. What then might be the experience of a 14 or 15-year-old living in a city in late 19th century America?

I'm thinking like 1880s or '90s in a city like Chicago, Boston, or Philadelphia and working class. Public education? Any education? Working? Living with parents or out on their own? When would they be expected to start 'making a life for themselves'?

I should also clarify that this is based on an assumption of accuracy regarding the idea of the teenager as a post-war concept.

Why isn't China socialist in the traditional welfare state and pro-employee sense?

How was communism justified when the popular aspects of socialism, such as free healthcare, generous welfare benefits, pro-employee labour laws were (partly) enshrined into law in the soviet bloc, and not in China?

Wasn't it odd that the movement of returning power to the workers didn't result in higher living standards for the weak and poor?

Why did Dutch become so distinct?

Why did Dutch become distinct enough to be it's own language when other medieval dialects of German didn't shift as far apart? Does it have to do with French influence?

The Seleucid Empire seems to have succeeded to the heart of the old Persian Empire. What happened to the Persian elites?

I think I read in Pierre Bryant's book that Persians were very much the elite throughout the Achaemenid Empire. Local elites may have continued in some way, but Persians with a close relationship to the Shahanshah were put in all of the prominent positions.

What happened to the Persian elite after the Seleucid Empire was formed? Were they gradually replaced by Greek elites, or were they swept out of their positions all at once?

This is a little niche and random but I'm desperate for any kind of source on the first ever display of Sir William Hamilton's collection in the British Musem

Like the title says, I'm looking for either paintings or descriptions of the first ever display of Hamilton's collection at the Museum. I've found lots from the 1850's and lots about the man and his collection, but nothing on the physical layout of the very first display and it's driving me mad!

Was there any contact between Western Europe and Eastern Asia in the late Middle Ages? Had there been any contact before?

If there was, what was it like? Did the Europeans find it odd that the Japanese ate with chopsticks? Were the Chinese surprised to find very little rice in Europe?

Were human remains ever used systematically for enriching agricultural soil? If so, could a skewed understanding of that have lead to human sacrifices?

I've been wondering if priests throughout the globe, due to a screwed-up understanding of how agriculture works (due to distancing themselves from menial labor), may have led their faithful subjects to sacrificing humans to enrich barren soil, and disguised it as the will of gods or whatnot. Could this have partially explained the correlation between the long lasting droughts and increase in human sacrifices in Aztec-controlled central America (besides the sociopolitical morale games started with the Flower Wars)?

Did flag-bearers really march into the heat of battle?

In war-paintings, you always see some guy carrying the flag right there alongside the armed soldiers. Wouldn't that be tantamount to a suicide mission?

Take this picture for instance.

Or this one.

Is that just a little artistic license by the artists to make things a little more dramatic? Or was this actually done?

EDIT: Follow up question; when was this practice discontinued?

Today:

Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.

So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

Meth Use During WW2?

A few questions I personally have:

  • How prevalent was the use of meth
  • Which countries used it? Which used it more/most?
  • Why was meth favored over other amphetamines, cocaine?
  • What was it mostly used for?
  • What were some other drugs used during the war to help soldiers function?
