Is there hard evidence saying that Hitler planed and was directly behind the holocaust?

Some time ago in college we looked at the evidence for functionalism and intentionalism and there was hardly any evidence showing that Hitler planed it and decided on what was happening with the extermination of Jews. Is it just the fault of my lecturer or is there really only little evidence?

What were some of the biggest "conspiracy theories" perpetuated during the Roman Republic/Empire?

For example, in the modern day there is a lot of controversy over how JFK was assassinated and whether there may have been a cover-up. Even if evidence of a cover-up is slim, there are still a lot of people who believe that there was more foul play involved.

Were there any large conspiracy theories like that, which were believed by a large segment of the Roman population despite lack of evidence to support such theories?

Why did humans leave Africa?

Not sure if this is the right sub to ask this, but I just got to thinking of this. If early humans were adapted to African climates, why did they migrate/spread to places with much different climates, such as Europe, Asia, present-day Russia/Siberia, etc.? Was it a matter of searching for better food sources (following herds, food shortages in their original region of Africa)? Competition between other humans? Or did early humans just sort of expand their range until they unintentionally wound up in such places? Again, I'm not sure if this is quite the right place to post this sort of history question, but I couldn't find a better one.

How did it come to be that Corsica is a French possession and Sardinia is Italian?

Corsica and Sardinia are separated by a few miles and it seems strange to me that one belongs to France and the other belongs to Italy. Corsica is "closer" to Italy than France. How did this arrangement occur? Did Italy ever possess both islands? Did France? Have these islands been a source of strife for the two countries in the past?

Historic Document Translation?

I am having trouble translating a document from 1865. I have the beginning: "the following is a list of the sales of the personal estate of ______ ______ deceased sold by me as administrator on the 21st day of June 1865 on a credit of 6 months"

The document then has three columns with items, titled "names", "articles", and "amounts".

There is a reoccurring item that says "do" and I cannot figure out what they mean by this. It occurs in both the "names" and "articles" columns. And has prices associated with it. I was thinking it might be similar to saying ditto, same as above (SAA), or using the " ".

Here is an example of how "do" would occur in a row:
name: Mrs. Smith, article: 1 do do do, amount: 170.00.

Anyone ever seen this before? Thanks for any help :-)

Did any of the people involved in Georges Milies' A Trip to the Moon live to see the 1969 moon landing?

If so, is there any recording of what they thought, to see their old fantasy become a reality? Also, the film ends with a space capsule landing in the ocean. Was it pure chance that the film's ending matches the ending of many mid-century space missions, or by the early 20th century was it known that a rocket space mission would end in the ocean?

Choice of St. Andrew's cross for Confederate Battle Flag

While researching an article on the Confederate Battle Flag some years back, I remember reading one account that claimed the (oblique) St. Andrew's cross was chosen for its design (over the -- upright -- St. George's cross) in an effort to mitigate any offense to Richmond's Jewry.

I know that the Scottish flag was also an influence, but could anyone point me to a source for what was claimed above?

What was the US Presidential security detail like in the 1800s?

I've seen photos (like this one of President Lincoln or this one of McKinley or this one of Garfield) where it would seem that the President is just hanging around in public like any other citizen, without any body guards around him. Are these scenes staged, or that he is just within a 'secured' area? Are the security personnel simply just beyond the frame of the photo or drawing? Could any person just walk up and strike up a conversation with the president ...or, say, shoot him?

Did the ancient people really believe everything about their mythologies?

We have all of these manuscripts and poems and epics recounting all of these amazing and complicated stories about their gods, demigods, titans, monsters and other creatures, such as in the Greek and Egyptian religions.

But how much of it was actually taken seriously by these ancient people?

I'm not sure how people back then were actually taught about their respective religions, so some explanation there would be useful. Like, did they have church or religious schooling, or was it just their normal curriculum? And in this context how much of this amazing mythology was actually taught and/or really believed?

Any info regarding the nature of religious belief in the ancient world would be appreciated since I really don't know much regarding it. :)
