Pineapples and various other fruits, for example. Apparently they were a party item, but wasn't scurvy a problem for sailors? How would you stop sugar getting damp in the hold of a ship?

Or was the technology and unified front of the Europeans too much for the native Americans to overcome?

Hi,
I'm doing homework for my master's and I'm running into problems with my footnotes, how do I include multiple sources such as a letter quoted in an encyclopedia, or government documents included in a collection of government documents, or an essay quoting a letter inside an encyclopedia? I've never had to do more than one level of citation before and traditionally I would rip the primary source out of the collections, but I do not think that is what my professor is looking for.

As I conduct my genealogical research back through medieval Europe through one of my "gateway ancestors," I run into confusion over names varying quite a bit in even contemporary records. It's not just that standardized spelling is a modern invention, it's that names were completely transformed between languages.
My current example:
William of Faucigny is the anglicized version of this 11th-12th century man. He is referred to as Guillaume de Faucigny in French, but Latin documents from the time refer to him as...Guillelmi(?) And I can't even tell which member of his family would have been referred to as Gebennensis. (His father Louis? His brother Guy?)
And I remember being really surprised to learn that "Christopher Columbus" was not what the explorer's friends called him.

And was it actually ever added to the Geneva convention? If so, when was it removed?

I am interested in finding out some of the more odd medical practices and developments of world war one. By odd I mean things that would be considered strange now or at the time of world war one (1910 to 1920 preferably). I would like replies that are sourced but those that aren't would be appreciated.

So did Slavs migrate with the Germanic, Scythian/Sarmatian/Alan, and Hunnic tribes during the Migration Era? It's remarkable to me that we don't hear anything about the Slavs or slavic lands from the Romans.

I am doing a semester-long project on the rise and fall of different dynasties throughout history. This was a fairly simple project until I came to the Ottoman Empire. It was very hard to get information regarding the Ottoman Empire that was supported by more than one source.
What I am asking from you historians is to tell me all about the following: science and technology, military, foreign stability, domestic stability, economy, and competition. The instructions as to what I should be looking for were very vague, so any information would help.

Hello /r/AskHistorians,
I was wondering what to do with primary documents I have, as I wonder if they have any benefit to putting them out there for others to see. If anyone has any suggestion as to who I should contact or options I have that would be great.
The documents are letters from political prisoners in Ireland in the 1980s. There's a lot of details about politics current to that time, and opinions on what was happening. One of the writers is Michael McHugh, who killed a Garda in 1985, and since has been trying to get released under the Good Friday Agreement. From what I have found, he is still imprisoned.
Thanks!

How quickly did they appoint a new leader? How did he obtain the position? Was there mass chaos, or did the transition occur relatively easily?

My students read a series of quotations from Gandhi about his goals, and will be assessing how successful he was. One quote from 1928 was: "My ambition is much higher than independence. Through the deliverance of India, I seek to deliver the so-called weaker races of the Earth from the crushing heels of Western exploitation in which England is the greatest partner." (Young India, 12 January 1928)
Clearly, Nehru had the advantage of living 15+ years longer than Gandhi. As the leader of independent India, he was in a position to offer tangible support to independence movements. And it may be hard to measure the extent of Gandhi's inspirational influence around the world. Still, assuming Nehru shared that goal with Gandhi, can we say if one was ultimately more effective than the other?

And would it have been uncommon for a group of about twenty-five Vikings to go off and raid villages on their own? Or did they always travel in the hundreds/thousands?

It seems that most of the movies, and popular culture in general, regarding the second world war always focuses on the roll of the USA or England (and Germany off course). However, the town i'm from (Welberg; Steenbergen. NL) was liberated by Canadians. I've tried to look it up, but I find it hard to put facts into perspective.

The Asian culture shows dragons within its history.
But also in Europe like the story of Beowolf, they also use dragons.
How did two different cultures come up with the same kind of thing? Always wondered..

How popular were fascist movements in America from 1930 to 1966? Were there offshoots of fascism in latin america and/or the US?
Most of the literature I've read so far that pertains to fascism is about fascism as a means to reject political systems (Bill Robert Paxton) and I was also wondering if fascism could be understood as a rejection of mainstream political ideology as well.
Anything to clarify this would be helpful, Thanks!

First, I apologize if this is a question for a linguist. But how long after the Fall of Rome (or even during) did they come about? And did they come about because of regional dialects of Roman Latin?

My question was inspired by the two cellos video going around that shows two men in period costumes playing AC/DC's Thunderstruck using only 2 cellos. It led me to wonder if there were alternative, punk or heavy metal genres that existed during that time. Was the music that is popularly known from that era essentially their version of Pop to Top 40?
