I bought this chair a while back at an antique store and at the time I was taking an elective on mythology. When I showed the picture to my professor she mentioned a few options, Themistocles and Pericles mainly, but wasn't quite sure exactly. Perhaps someone here can give me a hand at identifying this guy.

What were the central assumptions that defined Wilmot's Proviso and the Calhoun Resolutions, and how did they pertain to the beginning of the Civil War? Also, how did each appeal to basic elements in american culture?

I mean..I understand why they declared war on Japan..Pearl harbor and all..
But why did the USA split her military strength on to two separate fronts? Were we that confident in our ability to win on both fronts?

I'm majoring in history, and am choosing to minor in a foreign language, and those are the only three offered. I'm leaning torward Chinease, even though I know its incredibly challenging, because its really rare for people in my area to speak it. What do you historians think?

While many countries have nuclear weapons, has a war ever happened between two nations that had nuclear weapons (but obviously chose not to use them). For example, there was a lot of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States, but no shots were ever fired. Other wars that I can think of recently have only had nuclear weapons on one side of them.
Follow up question: If the answer is "Yes" to two warring nations both having nuclear weapons, how serious was the consideration to use them?

It's only about 2,000 miles from buffalo to Mexico City. It's a long travel, but not un heard of. In Eurasia there were trade routes from the pre columbian near east to the Far East. So I am sure the Byzantines were somewhat aware of the Indians and the Chinese.
Is there any evidence of the Iroquois (or any north eastern Indian tribe) having trade with the Aztecs?

It seems like any time drones are mentioned on a public forum, a handful of people champion the idea and point out all the things they'll soon revolutionise while the majority of people are terrified that they'll soon be under constant surveillance or at the receiving end of a hellfire missile.
A century ago when aeroplanes started coming onto the scene, was there similar panic and debate? What were the big fears of the time in regards to them?

Marx viewed religion as irrelevant or even as a roadblock to human progress. Seeing as this was a major concept within Marxism:
Sharing any other examples of atheist policies in other communist states would be fascinating as well!

I know this was a period when American politics were developing, becoming democratized, and old hierarchies crumbled. I'm mostly interested in why his policies arose rather than what they did.

I'm taking a course in Modern Art now, and we are covering late 19th century French art (mostly Impressionism). My professor mentioned in passing that she has written books and articles on the role of feminism in that time period. I'm extremely interested in both 19th century France and feminism, not to mention Art History, so the intersection of these three topics is really exciting. My professor recommended some articles and books which I plan on reading. However, going in, I'd like to have a general overview of the whole situation. Thank you!

The Romans had so many technological and tactical advantages over other civilizations. For instance, packing the infantry tight together and pressing into the enemy proved far superior to the individual no-strategy-charge employed by barbarians. However, not 400 years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Vikings are back at it again charging in like maniacs and the West Franks are using long swords. Similarly, the segmented armor which was so much more effective and deflecting and displacing blows than mail was soon replaced by mail soon after the Roman's disappearance from Western Europe. Why did nobody emulate them?

I suppose a necessary question to go along with this is if we even have the ability to know. Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find a similar question.

I'm surprised I wasn't able to find someone asking this question before, but I wasn't able to. I'm curious, why was the Eastern Roman Empire able to stay together, while the Western half fell? Is it because the Eastern part contained the capital? Presumably, the Romans would have tried harder to protect it. Or was only the Western half ever under threat? I've looked around the web a bit and really can't find much information on this, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out!

When did the British nobility switch from speaking French to English. Also when French was the predominant language, did any of the nobles speak Old English? Could they communicate this commoners?
