If the disintegration of Germany and overly punitive measures toward the Weimar Republic's economy created instability and the political climate necessary for WWII, why didn't the West's punitive economic measures and the following disintegration of the Soviet Union also result in large scale war?

Im listening to the audiobook so unforuntely I can't point to specific passages. But it feels like Churchill is refering to a lot of people as princes who are not necessarily the sons of a king.
Is this because prince used to be more catch-all? Am I imagining things? I'm getting the understanding the nobility titles at one point weren't incredibly standardized. Is there a point when prince had a different connotation?

I'm a third-year undergraduate history major previously leaning towards specializing in Latin American history, except now I've been introduced to the very large and complicated world of comic books. How does one go about studying comic books, and is this a realistic thing to shift my specialization to?
I haven't been this excited about the idea of studying something since my first year, so please point me in the right direction for educating myself on this subject more, if you can!

In the USA at least. Is this tradition common for other nations as well? Did the National Anthem used to be used more frequently to start off different types of occasions? (Apologies if this is in the FAQ, I am on mobile and couldn't check it)

I'm willing to read a two to three thousands pages on American Revolution. So far I've read "The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution" by Baylin, "The Creation of the American Republic, 1776-1787" by Wood, Fedralist Papers and some Thomas Paine. What's next?

Is there the possibility of major discoveries occurring in this century based on further study of primary sources that we already have (excluding new documents that are dug up from new archaeological sites, for example)?

For example, the rooks in the Lewis chessmen. I live in York which was founded by vikings and there are also statues of berserkers biting their shields in fury.
Is this merely artistic interpretation or was this a way of intimidating enemies? Was this common?

This particular area seems to be glossy at best when researching tribal organization in any books I've found, does anybody have any information regarding this broad subject?

Why not lie down when the other side is firing or why not try to construct some sort of defending structure (steel plates etc.) that can be placed in front of the line for them to crouch behind? I've looked everywhere for this and cant find anything

Hello fellow historians,
I've been looking for a long time to find a copy or transcript of the diary of Thomas Thistlewood, Jamaican slave owner during the 18th century.
Unfortunately, I've had no luck, other than locating third party analysis of the work with only small excerpts. Does anyone know where I can find this document?
Any direction or information would be greatly appreciated!

Given that Russia is descended from a state founded in the Middle Ages by the Rurikids, what did he consider to be its antique precursor?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but my mom and I had a question about a badge (?) we found on my grandfather's army uniform. Here's a picture. I believe he worked stateside as a training officer and after the war, he went on to be a ballistics engineer with the Army, if that helps. We were wondering what this particular badge signified, and were especially curious about the meaning behind the oil lamp (I think that's what it is).

I've only ever heard Hitler's voice when he's doing that very dramatic yelling thing during his speeches. I'm curious to hear what he sounded like in ordinary conversation. I'm reading Mein Kampf and for some reason I keep imagining a posh british voice.

I've comes across quite a few references to aspects of Roman culture which are identifiable as being 'pop culture', even if not in a directly modern sense, but I don't know that I've ever seen mention of anything vaguely recognisable as such in the post-Roman period (in the West, at least) until comparatively recent history. I generally don't subscribe to the 'dark ages' concept, so I'm curious... Did pop culture cease following the Roman period? If so, when is the next time we see something identifiable as such occur in the West?

I would like to think of video games as films. If you watch a lot of movies that is considered completely ok by most people. Being a film buff is perfectly healthy hobby.
But if you play video games or say you are a hardcore gamer than it is more likely that people are going to say that your hobby is wasteful and frowned upon than not.
I would like to know: Did many parents, teachers, or others look down on other kinds of hobbies from earlier generations? I wonder, were any movie fans during 1914 looked down on the same way that people who play video games are today?

I'm not extremely educated on the topic, but from what I understand, Ashkenazi Jews appear to have very significant middle eastern genes (to simplify). My question is: where is the rest of their dna from? When and who would have been introduced into the bloodline? Could the European DNA just be from intermarriages of Khazars?

I have been told, via a thread on AlternateHistory.com that perhaps surprisingly McCarthy was a staunch anti-racist and anti-segregationist, to the point of alienating many Southerners who supported his anti-communism. AH.com is usually reliable when they're talking about real history. However, I have not found any sources for this claim through quick google and duckduckgo searches. Can anyone clue me in and provide some good source material?
