To clarify, I know his actions and orders led to the death of millions upon millions of people, but did he ever kill anyone with his own hands, personally, while he was the leader of Nazi Germany?

Patton as a general has always interested me. After reading a few books about him (the Patton Papers, Patton: Genius for War), I still wonder how distinct this divide was.

I've just seen The Monuments Men (good film) and they mentioned that unlike the Allies who intended to return stolen art (wherever possible) the Soviets intended to seize the art for War Reparations. What does this mean? Did Russia sell the art to pay for damages? Did they place it in their own museums? Where is this art today?

I know about the martial lords and the invasions of the late 11th century, but how far did these political changes impact upon the culture of everyday Welsh people during the period? Was there much 'Normanisation'? Was there much resettlement by the Normans in Wales or were they just a colonial aristocracy who didn't particular intermarry with the local population?
Thanks!

The books are Settling Accounts by Harry Turtledove, a work of fiction and not based on real life WW2 events.

The American slaves were famously inspired by the Biblical tale of Moses, who freed the Israelites from Egyptian domination. However, (if I recall right) most black slaves came from western Africa, around Mali, whereas most African Christianity at the time would have been around Ethiopia. Are there any accounts of missionaries to the slaves?

As I recall, possibly from the BBC docu-series "A History of the World", Martin Luther was asked (possibly in court) if he wrote the documents criticising the Church (possibly because if he admitted they were his words, he would be severely punished).
He then said something about standing up to a tyrannical system, even if his life was on the line. This would have been a translated line, to English, but I recall it was quite powerful and righteous.
After my own googling, I think it would have been during the Diet of Worms.
Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about?
If I now recant these, then, I would be doing nothing but strengthening tyranny”
Maybe it is another translation of that line? I am fairly sure it had to do with "strengthening tyranny", but the line was more impacting than that.

A friend of mine and I are having an absolutely uninformed conversation about the French Revolution, and it brought up a couple questions.
First, did the immediate horror of the Revolution spawn any "popular" conservative movements? I see on wiki that a boardly monarchist right wing formed in the French Parliament during the Revolution, but I'm interested in the effects amongst the public-at-large, especially after the rise and fall of Napoleon.
Second, and generally, what is the broader picture of the popular right? It seems to me as though "conservatives" have traditionally supported the upper-class and existing institutions. While we certainly (in the US, anyway) still see that lineage, when did the right become the kind of politics that could be held by salt-of-the-earth types? When did conservatism become popular among the lower- and middle-classes?

My great uncle, Private Owen Fee, was enlisted in the 54th New York National Guard Infantry from 07/26/1864 to 11/10/1864. I am doing genealogy research and can't seem to find this infantry's activities during this time span. Any help, resources, or additional information about the 54th New York National Guard Infantry would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Reddit!

I found it interesting but I would like to hear a qualified perspective on these claims.

Half of the literature seems to say Cortes was extremely lucky with smallpox,Mesoamerican factionalism and Aztec political weakness, while the other half say he successfully read and exploited the situation. Just how able was Cortes politically/militarily and which Historians argue for and against?

In ancient times, the looting of enemy towns by victorious armies was quite common. When the soldiers enter the town and begin their looting, how do they behave to eachother? I mean, would they attack their fellow soldiers to snatch the loot from them? I could imagine that happening out of greed. So how agressive were looting soldiers to eachother?

Cleaning a blackpowder gun after firing it is an extensive process that usually involves a lot of water. How would soldiers clean them give their relatively limited resources in the field?

It may sound silly, but I wanted to present it to my son later. We were on the subject this morning, and he'll get a real kick if his father actually did some research on it. Only I don't have time to.

This would be very helpful as I have been confused by them, especially with regards to how they go along with the French Revolution

I was curious if there ever was an actual deadly, invitation-only style tournament held by nefarious rich men on a remote island.

Do you know of any resources which provide statistics for book publication in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? I'm writing a PhD in English Literature and my current topic looks at the rise in book and periodical publication in those years, but I can't find any concrete statistics on the subject.
What I'd like to be able to do is say, for example, 'In 1922 XXXX books were published compared to XXXX in 1905'.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
