Did Mediterranean ships and seagoers during the Greek Classical age, such as Athens' fleet exclusively travel close to the coast or were there instances when ships spent several days at sea?

I have read many times that early Mediterranean seagoers (as well as those during later ages) hugged the coast and feared the open sea due to storms. However, how does this fit into voyages between Greece and Egypt? Did ships always go the very long way around? What about the Egyptian campaign in ~460BC? Didn't the Athenian fleet go directly from Cyprus to Egypt, as this wikipedia map would suggest?

Were there any countries that were not greatly affected by the Great Depression in the 1930s?

As several countries (e.g. China, Poland and Australia etc) managed to maintain positive economic growth throughout the recent global financial crisis; were there any countries that managed a similiar outcome during the Great Depression in the 1930s?

Do you read historical fiction of your topic of expertise? If so, who would you recommend?

I've seen Philippa Gregory, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Mary Renault et al criticized for their lack of historical accuracy. So I'm coming asking: what's your topic and who writes reasonably well about it?

How did secret agents actually operate during the cold war?

Is there any resemblance of reality in the most popular works of fiction of that period (for example James Bond movies)? Were the agents actually getting "adventurous" assignments while equipped with hi-tech gadgets, etc.?

Psychological Warfare during the Vietnam war

I remember reading that during the Vietnam war, Vietcong troops would do things in order to psychologically scar the troops they were fighting. For instance at night going and randomly killing one soldier, leaving the rest alive but afraid each night. Or going into a tent and killing all but one soldier sleeping there so he would be completely traumatized.

Is there any accuracy to this? What other types of psychological mindgames did the Vietcong play during the Vietnam War?

Importance of castles (in war)

Hi, so my question is about castles in premodern (medieval) warfare. For example (very stupid example, but should work): if France attacks Spain, the Spanish soldiers would hide in the castles and barricade themselves in it. Now, why would French bother to attack the castle, at a cost of heavy casualties, when they have Spain (or the surrounding area around the castle) for themselves, to plunder or whatever. I mean, if you are a French military officer, why should you attack a heavily fortified castle, where the defender has an obvious advantage, when you could just leave them be and go on about your bussiness; and perhaps cut off thier supplies.

Thank you, sorry for the lame English and maybe stupid question.

Would a midshipman be reassigned to a different ship when than the one he was originally on after getting back with a captured ship.

Would a midshipman be reassigned to a different ship when than the one he was originally on after getting back with a captured ship.

I am reading the Hornblower books and at some point in the first book they capture a boat full of rice, Hornblower is assigned by the captain to sail it back to England, if he hadn’t sank it and if he had actually got back to port would he have to wait for the Indefatigable to return or would he be assigned to a new ship.

How did the tariff issue evolve and affect American politics throughout the nation's history?

This is a second attempt at asking as I didn't get an answer when I posted last week.

I'm currently an AP US History student. I've noticed my book has spent a lot of time discussing how various tariff bills were passed or how the issue divided the parties during different time periods. Despite tariffs being a persistent issue, we've never really discussed exactly what tariffs are or their larger political/historical implications in my class. I feel like I'm missing a huge political concept here.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Why did the parties who supported/opposed tariffs feel the way that they did?

  2. What was so controversial and divisive about tariffs?

  3. How did the tariff issue change over time?

  4. What tariffs had the largest affect on the country?

  5. Why was the issue so persistent and what lead to it eventually tapering off (although, that's an assumption based on the fact that I never really hear them discussed as a modern political issue)?

I understand that these questions cover a huge span of years, but even an answer that was focused on a very specific time period would be helpful. Hopefully these aren't really stupid questions or ones that are unanswerable. If my questions are too broad, I could try to further narrow them down.

EDIT: grammar

Cost of the British Empire

I saw a Milton Friedman lecture on YouTube about him talking about the history of Colonialism and he mentioned a fact that it cost the British far more money to maintain and run India than they ever got as benefits.

My question is then, what are some studies that show the costs of the Empire (India or total) compared to the benefits of it.

Thanks

Edit: Jethrogalloch "...I'd like to take this a little further and ask this: What colonial empires were most profitable relative to the money invested in them?" That is now part of the question now

Qatar has been rightly under intense scrutiny ever since they were awarded the World Cup for 2022 regarding their treatment of visiting workers who are building the infrastructure and transforming forever the country.

Are there parallels with the Industrial Revolution in England? The building of the railroads in the western US? The public works projects of the Romans?

Is there any worthwhile scholarship on video games development throughout history?

I'm really interested in history and video games, and I was very curious about scholarship that might be available on the topic. Mainly, I'd want to learn about how video games have developed and changed in scope and impact on culture.

So to reiterate my question, does anyone know of any good scholarship that they've read/heard about on this topic? I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit. If so, I will gladly delete the thread and move on to that subreddit.
