Interested in filibusters and filibustering.

I've recently been reading up on filibusters, particularly in Spanish Florida, and was curious if you all know about some more interesting cases around the country.

Book recommendations are welcomed as well!

Are survivalists and apocalyptic fears a modern phenomena or have they always been around?

What I mean is in the context of those preparing for the 'apocalypse' (i.e. purchasing highly-priced fully kitted out bunkers). Has this sort of behavior always been around, and if so how was it managed with various different technological advances?

Thanks in advance!

Are there any well-known "portals" to the underworld?

I know there were portals discovered in the Phrygian city of Hierapolis, with the traditional Greek symbolism associated with the underworld. I'm curious as to whether there are anymore Greek portals, or sites from other cultures associated with an underworld.

Why do actors in modern movies today feel more "real" than the acting we see in old movies like Casablanca?

Is the difference in technique, culture, medium, or something else?

I've heard of "method acting" where actors almost immerse in and become their role--was this less common before? If the difference is cultural, does that mean that normal people actually walked and talked like the people in old movies? Did the shift from the theater stage to TV and movie screens play a role? A mix of causes? Or am I way off base and is there some other reason entirely?

Were any other nations aware of or working on atomic weaponry prior to the bombing of Japan?

It's my understanding that the United States was the only country actively building atomic weapons at the end of WW2. Did other nations know it was possible to build atomic bombs? If yes, had anyone started building one?

Any information/resources you could throw at me would be great!

What would it have been like to be a settler in Israel immediately after the country was formed?

How would the experience be different depending on the country the settler was from originally? What would the culture of the new country have been like? How technologically advanced would Israel have been in 1948 compared to other countries at the same time?

Where in continental Europe was Napoleon most popular / least popular?

http://i.imgur.com/X25r97u.png

In essence, I know Napoleon marched through Europe, deposed ancien regimes, and in many cases was met with large scale collaborations. Looking for contributions in any or all of these sectors. If possible outline the major factions within the states to give an idea of who won.

E.g: Minorities favoring Napoleon, or rural majorities, or urban republican bourgeoise etc.

Class and Ethnic conflicts experts could have a lot to contribute here. I am aware of the Monarchist - Republican dispute, but as Napoleon ruled as a Monarch I wonder if there were cases were populations aided him and, after his crowning, turned against him?

Experts on European Royalty would be helpful here to help understand why certain dynasties or families were favorable to Napoleon and others not. He did seem to marry an Austrian, and invade Austria later I think. Forgive my ignorance about this that is why I am asking.

as for the regions outlined in the points, I am equally interested in opposition and collaboration. Evidence or motivations as to why populations welcomed or opposed Napoleonic France's would be ideal.

South

  • Italy: i know he was popular in parts of Italy, I am most interested in Naples, Tuscany, and Venice.

  • Ottoman Space / Empire: As a known enemy of the knights of Malta I suspect he may have been viewed favorably in the Maghreb, after his episodes in Egypt and the Levant I am curious of how tense the 'Illyrian' and Greek border was

Central

  • German Lands: I noticed that Bavaria controls Salzburg and Sud Tyrol, which suggests to me that they were willing collaborators whereas Austria and Prussia were known enemies of Napoleon. I am also curious about the other states such as Westphalia, and whether there were factions within Austria and Prussia (Slavs, Hungarians, Romanians etc) who may have been favorable to Napoleon.

  • Low Countries: I noticed the assimilation into metropolitan France and am curious if there were anti-French insurgencies or ideological disputes or perhaps was there widespread collaboration

East

  • Poland: would be curious to here if there were Poles who opposed Napoleon, I suspect they were mostly favorable to him

  • Balkans: As Napoleon had opposed Russia and Austria I am curious if Romanians, Serbs, or anti-Habsburg monarchists, ethno-religious minorities, and Ukrainians joined Napoleon's forces when he eventually invaded Russia?

North

  • Scandinavia: I have no knowledge as to this region's role in the era other than Sweden's consistent opposition.

Books on War Theory?

I may have missed this in the booklist, but is there a list of people/books on war strategy?

In particular I think I saw one of the flaired users mention works by a Prussian author writing in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, but I can't remember the guy's name.

I want to embroider a "lady's favour" for my boyfriend for his birthday, but I have no idea what to put on it. Any ideas for appropriate medieval symbolism would be appreciated.

My boyfriend is a Lit/History major specializing in the medieval period, especially medieval Christianity, with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies. I've been playing around with embroidery lately and I think it would be nice to make him a lady's favour like knights used to carry around. However, I know nothing about this subject and wouldn't want to spend a lot of time making something poorly researched. What sort of meaningful symbols or pictures might appear on an embroidered handkerchief from this time period? He is a devout Catholic, but also has a deep appreciation for Middle Eastern history. If I should direct this to a different subreddit, please let me know. I am new to reddit.

Armies during the crusades

I was wondering what the armies were like during the first few Crusades in the Holy Land. I would think that the European style of warfare with heavy cavalry and heavy infantry would be rather unsuited to desert warfare, the sun's heat cooking them in their armor. If this is the case, did the crusaders fight differently than they would have back in Europe? If not, how different we're the armies of the Muslims and the Crusaders?

How is that both ancient Europe and ancient China both have dragons as part of their mythology?

I realize the dragons are different, but both types of dragons are essentially fire-breathing lizards, which seems like an incredible coincidence to me. Did one culture influence the other or did they both develop the concept of dragons independently?

Was minimum wage intended to be a living wage?

I'm talking about in the United States in particular. If it helps, I've tried breaking my question down into two more specific questions:

  1. Do we have any quotes from the politicians who passed the first national minimum wage that support either the idea that the minimum wage was or was not supposed to be livable?
  2. How easy/difficult would it have been to live off of the minimum wage when it was first introduced?

Sources, as always, are greatly appreciated.
