Is there a historical reason for Canadian's having a polite culture?

This is a subjective question, considering each individual person has the potential to be an ass. I know many Canadians who are asses. However, it is a very common belief that Canadians, on the whole, are good, civil and polite human beings.

Disregarding the many jerks in Canada and focusing on the polite...stigma? Where did this stigma come from, and why is that a commonly believed trait for Canadians internationally?

Introducing The AskHistorians Podcast & Episode 001 Discussion Thread

The mods and some flaired users have been kicking around the idea of putting together an /r/AskHistorians Podcast for a while now, and late last year we decided to actually do it. After a few months in closed beta we are ready for launch!

It is with enormous pleasure that I announce the pilot episode of The AskHistorians Podcast. The podcast will feature interviews with our flaired users and outside historians, answer readings, and episodes where users talk about their area of expertise. It will feature an ensemble cast of hosts and presenters, and topics covered will include basically everything /r/AskHistorians does. Initially the episodes will be published each week, but we will be moving to fortnightly releases after the first month or so.

Episode Schedule:

  • Feb 4: Episode 001 - On Julius Caesar (/u/Artw interviews /u/Celebreth)

  • Feb 14: Episode 002 - The Convict Cannibal of Van Diemen's Land (/u/TasfromTAS talks about his area of expertise)

  • Feb 21: Episode 003 - On Mesoamerican Sacrifice (/u/TasfromTAS and /u/idget present answers from /u/snickeringshadow)

  • Feb 28: Episode 004 - Part 1 of The Aztec Conquest (/u/TasfromTAS interviews /u/400-Rabbits)

We have a couple more episodes in the can, and a few more close enough, but this should give you an idea of what we have coming up.

Special Thanks go to /u/bemonk for his invaluable practical advice and for organising the intro & outro, /u/brigantus for the logo, and the flaired users & mods who gave feedback during the closed beta (especially /u/searocksandtrees).

How to Subscribe:

RSS Link: http://askhistorians.libsyn.com/rss

iTunes Link. You can also find us by searching for 'AskHistorians' in iTunes. Please rate and review the cast!

Discussion Thread:

I will post up a discussion thread for each episode, where you can ask follow-up questions and leave feedback. Feel free to ask /u/Celebreth questions about his interview in this thread.

EDIT: Some additional reading from /u/Celebreth

  • Goldsworthy, Adrian: Caesar: Life of a Colossus
  • Goldsworthy, Adrian: In the Name of Rome: The Men who Won the Roman Empire
  • Goldsworthy, Adrian: Roman Warfare
  • Goldworthy, Adrian: The Complete Roman Army
  • Bonner, Stanley: Education in Ancient Rome
  • Caesar, Julius: Gallic Wars
  • Caesar, Julius: Civil War
  • Caesar, Julius: Alexandrian War, African War, Spanish War

We had to learn a lot about the practicalities of podcasting, and there is a noticeable improvement in audio quality over the first few episodes. Still, feeback on audio quality etc is helpful.

We are really excited about this project, and we hope you are too.

Happy listening!

Was an invasion from anyone other than Britain feared in the United States in its first few decades? If so, what powers seemed most likely to attack?

I've read that the replacement of the Articles of Confederation was partially to protect from invasion by European great powers. But who could have invaded, besides Britain? Spain and France?

I only know the region wants to separate itself from Russia. Is it currently part of Russia or what is the whole thing about? Is the relationship between the two similar to that of Tibet and China?

Why does it seem that Henry III of England is so overlooked by (popular) history?

Although I realise there is probably a wealth of academic literature on him, Henry seems to be chiefly known for reigning forever and having a zoo, whilst his nemesis Simon De Montfort seems to hold more of a grip on imagination. So why is this King lacking in popularity in modern eyes? Was he incompetent but not as incompetent to be as memorable as his father King John, or was he greatly overshadowed by his son Edward I?

Something tells me this is really a question for Ask Science, but I'll see what I can get.

What caused Armenia to change locations?

I was admiring a map that showed up on map porn when I noticed that Armenia is quite a distance from its historical location.

Of course I realise countries grow and shrink over time but it almost seems it got up and moved hundreds of km to a different regions.

Any survivors from Pompeii?

This is just a random question that has been in my mind all night after seeing a trailer for the new movie coming out about Pompeii. I am not sure what the plot for the movie is, but in the case that the protagonists survive, is that plausible? Are there any records of survivors from there?

[North Korea] Why did the US wait so long to militarize their forces and send them to South Korea in the late 1940s?

Hello! I love this subreddit and this is my first time posting. I'm reading a book that was reccommended here about North Korea called "Under the Loving care of the Fatherly Leader". In one part I just read, the author was describing how Pyongyang started militarizing its forces in the late 1940s to prepare for a Korean War and they were aided by the Soviets, while the South Koreans were hobbled and held back by the US. Why didn't the US hold back South Korean forces?

What kind of backlash did Hitler get for indiscriminately killing so many mentally ill and disabled people?

Surely the citizens of Nazi Germany weren't so committed to the perfect race ideology to be totally alright with killing disabled people who could've easily been their family members. Sorry for so many Hitler questions.

Has an American court ever cited a decision from another Common Law country other than Britain?

US law originated from British Common Law, and even in modern cases you still see it cited once in a while. In other Common Law countries you often them citing from each other as well (an example would be a Singaporean court using an Australian decision as precedent). Are there any examples of something like this happening in an American court?
