What happened to Nestorian Christians?

It seems that christianity in East Asia was a not insignificant religion. Marco Polo mentions several cities with churches and small christian communities, and several high ranking officers in the Mongol Empire were christians

I would have expected christianity continue existing as a minority religion there, but in the 1800s when the Europeans became interested in the region christianity was nowhere to be seen

And while many people did convert to christianity, they converted to Catholicism, Protestantism, or other european denominations, why weren't they turning to the Nestorian Church?, what happened to it?

How did various explorers translate languages when they visited new regions?

Like how would Marco Polo figured out how to speak with the Mongols? Was it like 20 translators each communicating the message to each other? In the Americas was it a trial and error process? Were explorers ever able to fluently speak their new languages if they acquired them?

Somewhere between, say, 1950 and 2000, the name "Dick" went from a common respectable diminutive form of the name "Richard" to almost exclusively being used as a slang term for penis. Is there any timeline of how this happened, and when it began to become frowned upon as a name?

I know as early by 1971 at least, Nixon was making buttons with the Campaign Slogan "Can't lick our dick", so the euphemism was well in use and widespread enough to be part of a presidential campaign, but I'm not sure if it was part of his 1960 or 1968 campaigns. I have no idea what the diminutive began to be phased out as an acceptable nickname though, probably at least by 1990, right?

Historical evidence for Gautama Buddha

I've been reading a lot about Jesus as a historical figure, and reading about historical evidence for Jesus' existence and what he probably thought and taught in the historical sense rather than the theological sense, do we have anything similar for Gautama Buddha? Or is he an even more mythological figure than Jesus? Are there early manuscripts within the early centuries of Buddhism that talk about him like Gospels which were written within decades of his death by people who had heard oral traditions? Or is it mostly just oral traditions for centuries and centuries until anyone had written anything down so there lacks evidence of his existence as a historical figure?

I need to know where this is now

My family roots trace back to the Austro-Hungarian empire, specifically the eastern area. My great-great grandparents moved to Canada in 1922, and I posses a book with information about them. It says my great-great grandfather was born in Liweze Sokal, East Galicia. I know the history of Eastern Galicia, but I’m wondering if Liweze Sokal was a place of significance, or just a random village.

What was sex education like in the early 19th century?

I recently started watching the show Bridgerton on Netflix, which is set in London during the early 1800's. It's obvious that drama and plotlines are more important to the show than historical accuracy, but I find myself wondering how much is based on truth. To keep spoilers to a minimum, there is a character who is pregnant out of wedlock, and other girls are incredibly confused as to how she got pregnant without being married. The confused girls are of marrying age, but seem to have no idea that sex even exists. To what extent were women informed about sex and pregnancy during this period? Did this vary based on the class of the woman?

Egyptology vs History Major

This may seem obvious but with my strong interest in Ancient Egypt, Egyptology seems the most likely pathway for my education.

Am I able to get a similar education with a History major? How would I go about specializing my education/degree? Or is it best to stick with Egyptology?

What would a soldier in early WW1/20th century carry into battle?

Question came from seeing the picture of the First Battle of the Marne, not sure if this question really applies to WW1 after trench warfare, so this might be more relevant to just early 20th century warfare. But for a soldier of the age what would they be expected to carry into battle?

History of the Arbeidarpartiet (Labor Party) of Norway

I discovered in reading Wikipedia that the Norwegian center-left party, which like the center-left parties in most of northern Europe has been the dominant political force for almost a century was, at least at one point in its history, quite a bit more radical than its cousins in other nations.

The Arbeidarpartiet was a member of the comintern from 1919 to 1923. This is rather shocking to learn because as far as I can tell in every other country the established workers' party stayed with the Second International and a group split off to the left to become the "Communist Party of X". But in Norway the reverse happened, a group split off to the right in protest of the affiliation with the comintern, and it wasn't until later when the Arbeidarpartiet left the comintern that the two groups merged and a group split off to the left to become the Communist Party of Norway.

How can one account for the Arbeidarpartiet siding with the Bolsheviks?

What was the role of an Afro-American soldier or highest rank he could achieve in World War II?

Today I saw a bit of the movie 'Overlord', which follows the adventures of a platoon of American paratroopers on the night before D-Day. The movie begins by showing the platoon on board of their plane and the sergeant in charge is an Afro-American man. It also shows another Afro-American soldier, a private, on the plane, who is one of the main protagonists in the movie.

Strangely, my first thought was "yeah right, as if an Afro-American man would be put in charge over an entire platoon of white soldiers in 1940s America." My question is, was this done by the moviemakers because of modern political correctness and inclusion, or is it realistic? And secondly, how likely was it that an Afro-American private was placed in a platoon full of white men, and was treated by them like one of their equals?

What did early medieval/post-roman/dark age fortresses look like prior to encastellation in 10th-11th centuries?

I often find some random mentions about different fortifications built by franks and saxons and gaelics but I can never really find any sources detailing them. Did they exist? How were they built? How were they used? As far as I know the medieval castle began to appear in the 10th-11th centuries as motte-and-baileys, but do we know what came before that?

In “the Origins of Totalitarianism”, Hannah Arendt describes the British Empire as an “accident” and that the British “lucked into it”. To what extent is this true, and what is the underlying argument/evidence?

I’m about halfway through the book, obviously it’s a classic. While discussing the British empire she sort of passively mentions it’s an accident, as though that was a widely accepted view in the day, and doesn’t explain her position in detail. To what extent is that true?

I know that the British dominance in North America, especially in what is now the northeastern United States in replacing New Amsterdam and connecting with the lower colonies was largely a function of the English civil wars and religious persecution from the Tudors through Charles I and then Cromwell, driving religious minorities into New England. Cromwell then expanded the push as part of his puritanical identity, and the result during the course of the subsequent Dutch/English naval war was the temporary, and then permanent handing of New Amsterdam to the Brits (Russell Shorto’s “The Island at the Center of the World” has a good amount of this from The Dutch perspective, heavy focus on Stuyvesant).

But I don’t know nearly enough about the other conquests and how the empire pieced together.

Thank you for any guidance/insight.

I am a very wealthy nobleman (let's say, Europe of the 15th century) who owns 15 villages. How much contact do i have with my serfs? Do i ever meet then eye to eye?

I am from Poland but your answer can be about any parts of Europe. Also i would appreciate answers about any time period but i specified 15th century if you don't know where ti begin.

I have always wondered about it. Did noblemen have contact with their serfs? Was there any interaction, or did were they completely separated?

Were there any noblemen who were friendly towards their serfs?

How is research done on historic common life?

I've recently become very interested common daily life looked like throughout history. I hear little bits and pieces that surprise me like how shingles were mad or how roofs were thatched. Or how education worked in the ancient world. Or how clothes were worn in the middle ages of Europe.

I've tried to find comprehensive information about various places in history, like ancient Athens or Rome or Napoleon's France or Cuzco or Tenochtitlán.

I realize in many cases much of the information has been lost, but how do historians curate the information? I don't even know where I'd begin to look for things. When I've tried, it's like finding a needle in a haystack of mundane documents and records.

Looking for reading suggestions on Hokkaido during Muromachi / Sengoku periods

Sorry in advance if this is not the right place, I checked through the About tab and didn't see anything specifically against this but also realize this isn't exactly the type of narrow specific question that seems to be the purpose of this sub.

I'm specifically looking for historical information about Hokkaido during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods and what I've found on Youtube / Google so far I'm only finding broad level information about Japan as a whole during the periods. I'm probably not using the best search queries so my apologies in that regard. I've found a little bit of what I'm looking for on Wikipedia but want to build a better perspective of the time period than the few paragraphs there afford.

Does anyone have suggestions on any books or authors that I might look into?
