Mystery German Cockpit

I'm part of a Facebook page on WW2 history and someone posted this picture asking for help identifying the aircraft it belonged to. I hit up good 'ol Google and came up with nothing. I"m not even sure this is the right sub, but I'm going to take a swing.

All I know about it is that the original poster says it is a WW2 German aircraft. There's a visible plate that says Achtung! which pretty much confirms its nation of origin. Other than that I don't know and so far, none of the other people know. Help?

Under what arrangement was Teddy Roosevelt allowed to form a volunteer cavalry to fight in Cuba and how did the Department of War differentiate between regular troops and groups like the Rough Riders?

Roosevelt and his men were granted full rights and privileges to fight in a foreign country? Whose goals and under what pains was he fighting? Was he any different than a mercenary?

Where did people park carriages?

I was just thinking about parking lots and parking garages and the idea that we’ve agreed to stick within lines and park our cars in rows for easy access.

But it got me wondering: before the automobile what did people do with carriages and carts when they were away from home? Especially at sites like public lodgings/hotels where people might be coming and going any time?

Or what about evening events such as performances or dances where dozens of people might show up for only a few hours?

Was there a common practice or etiquette for this? For shorter events did they unharness the horses?

Are there any high-profile cases of atheism? (Pre-enlightenment, of course)

I know that “pre-enlightenment” encompasses thousands of years.. and it’s a euro-centric word that I don’t want to limit the scope of this question to.

I’m asking for two reasons:

  1. I have the suspicion that atheism doesn’t have to be this “learned” thing, it could just as easily be something that one finds, or stumbles on, all on one’s own. It makes no sense that every single human should automatically believe the religious narrative that they’re born into - i assume lots could simply not believe or even care to believe.

  2. I remember reading an atheist account from someone captured by the Spanish Inquisition. He said something along the lines of “who is this jesus fellow and what’s it to me?” (Though I haven’t been able to find this source again unfortunately)

Anyways, I hope the scope isn’t too large. Thanks in advance if there’s anything you can contribute.

I think there is a slave grave on my property (GA). How can I confirm this and where should I go to find a local expert?

I'm in rural center GA. We bought a large farm out here 8 years ago that had been in the same family since pre-civil war.

The prior owners told us there was a small family grave site on the property but it had been lost to nature over the years and the could only generally point to the area where it was located.

Over the years we have cleared a lot of the land for horse trails and we found the grave site. There is one large obelisk headstone of a 17yo girl. Historical records show she died during childbirth of her second child. The grave stone is pretty elaborate with a long psalm carved in one side. The other shows that she was born in 1840 and died in 1857.

While we were clearing the area we found near the grave a depression in the ground that is the size of a grave. There is a smooth stone set at one end that has no writing on it but does look like it was placed there.

Some locals that were helping clear the land swear that it is a slave grave.

How can we best verify if it is indeed a slave grave? What type of archaeological or historical society would be best to contact to help with something like this?

If it is a grave we would like to clear around it and make it part of the "memorial park" that we want to put there.

Civil War Uniforms

There are a group of United Stated Civil War soldiers from the union that had a quite different uniform. From pictures in books and movies they were loose and red. Their pants were what could you say? Puffy! It really stood out. What was their story? Were they an elite unit or just specific to something? Thank you historians!

Did Knights ever really have to worry in a fight?

So I apologize if this has been asked before but I've been curious.

A Knight's armor was extremely durable and well made, and often had them completely covered from head to toe in metal so did they ever have to really worry in battle? Was it common for a Knight to die or did they just kind of swing at each other until they tired out and left?

How would the ancient Romans have reacted to someone illegally wearing purple?

During the days of the Roman Republic, if I were to walk down a street in Rome in a purple outfit, how would people react?

Would they just find it tacky or would they find it offensive to the point of anger? Would I be likely to get assaulted or have an angry crowd tear the clothes off me?

This was also illegal, so what kind of punishment could I expect? was it considered a serious enough crime to be executed?

Did this change after Augustus? Did it become a more serious crime?

What does one do when you can't find primary sources for a topic?

I'm a senior in university, working on my history capstone. One year ago, I learned about the fake Hitler diaries and have chosen it as my topic for the capstone. The thing is I haven't had luck finding any primary sources? I have searched through many libraries, websites such internet archives and can't find anything. The only thing that's close to a primary source that I have is Robert Harris's Selling Hitler. Where else would I find primary sources? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Jewish Ghettos by Nazis voluntary

I was readimg trough my history teachers notes from the lesson in antisemitism. He had one line which read "To move to the ghettos was voluntary, but if a Jew was found outside, he was allowed to be killed" (translated from my Swedish). I haven't found any other sources saying this would be the case, but usually my teacher is a really reliable source. Do you know anything more about this?

Did jews interact with vikings?

There is a very famous jewish rabbi named rashi who was born in france in the year 1040, during the viking age. I know that the vikings/norse had some battles with the french and raided their villages, so it begged the question- did jews and vikings ever interact with one another? By trading or by being raided?

I havent found any sources that approve that, but if there was a jewish community there then it seems possible. I am interested to know what kind of relationship they had if any, so thanks if you have an answer.

Sorry for this stupid rambling i just want to know

MEGATHREAD | Day 1 of the AskHistorians Digital Conference 2020: ‘Business as Unusual: Histories of Rupture, Chaos, Revolution, and Change’

On behalf of the organising committee, welcome to the AskHistorians Digital Conference 2020! We’re thrilled to finally be able to share the work that we – and a small army of volunteers, moderators and guest historians – have been putting into the conference over the last few months. It promises to be a special few days. No one has ever held this kind of event using Reddit, and needless to say we’re excited to see what happens next.

If you’re interested in the background, rationale and other details of the conference – as well as comprehensive information about the participants, papers and panels – please check out our conference programme, designed by the immensely talented u/Soviet_Ghosts. Otherwise, feel free to start diving into today’s offerings!

This thread contains an overview of today’s events, with direct links added as soon as they go live, as well as an explanation of how to get involved. If you have any questions, leave them below and we’ll address them as soon as possible.

Today’s Schedule

Networking 1 (8:00 am, ET): Session on Academia I

Panel 1 AMA (10:00 am, ET): Indigenous Histories Disrupting Yours: Sovereignties, Histories and Power

Keynote Address (1:00 pm, ET): The Atomic Bomb and Visions of the New Post War Order

Panel 2 (4:00 pm, ET): How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Apocalypse: Imagining Mass Destruction

Networking 2 (8:00 pm, ET): Session on Academia II

How to participate:

Watch talks: The main body of the conference is made up of eight panels of 3-4 speakers, which have all been recorded in advance. Each speaker gets 10 minutes to discuss their own research, followed by a group discussion led by an expert moderator. Today’s panels have already been released via our YouTube channel – these recordings will be available indefinitely, so you’ll always be able to catch up on anything you missed.

Ask questions: Each panel will have its own AMA-style thread where you can ask the speakers and moderators anything you’d like to about their work. These will go live according to the schedule above, and will continue as long as the participants feel like answering more questions!

Attend live events: While most panels are recorded, some conference events are live. Today’s keynote address by Prof. Alex Wellerstein will take place live on Zoom – you can still register to attend here, but if it’s full don’t worry – we’ll be releasing a recording as soon as possible once it’s done.

Throughout the conference, we’ll also be hosting live networking sessions for participants and audience members to attend. Anyone is welcome to sign up for whichever event they wish – the full list can be found here. Today’s sessions are focused on Academia, broadly defined – they are aimed primarily at people undertaking (or interested in) academic degrees or careers in history, but anyone interested is welcome!

Be part of the conversation: We’ll be treating these daily conference megathreads like our Friday Free-For-Alls – you’re welcome to use them to discuss the conference, leave questions or comments or chat informally about the day’s papers, though keep in mind that our rules about civility are still very much in force. You can also follow updates on Twitter via @AskHistorians and #AskHistorians2020.

Were Communists in Weimar Germany open to work with Social Democrats and Liberals to stop the rise of Hitler, and vice versa?

I've heard some people say that Social Democrats and Liberals didn't want to work with Communists because they preferred Fascism over the threat of Communism, and I've heard others say that Communists didn't want to work with Socdems and Liberals because they weren't willing to negotiate and believed in "accelerationism" (the idea that misery will trigger a Communist revolution and thus be beneficial in the long term.) What really happened is probably more nuanced, that's why I came here to ask this question.

Colonial war treaties in the 19th century

Hi guys, I’m currently writing my A-Level history coursework, in which I have to review interpretations from 3 different historians about how policy led to the First World War.

One of the historians seems to blatantly forget about the treaties which were in place to try and stop the next European war spreading globally (which obviously didn’t end up working).

Am I right in thinking that these treaties were seen as legitimate at the time, and if so could anybody point me in the direction of them so I can review them?

To me it seems obvious that this was present, as if not there wouldn’t have been as great an incentive to blockade Germany, as you could just occupy wherever it’s supplies were being imported from, but obviously the blockade would have been still important. Any help would be appreciated
