Why do people in old paintings look like a fat baby in a wig?

You know what I mean, right? Think 15th-17th century art, especially in European royal portraits. Did people really look that way? Many portraits seem almost cherubic in nature.

How did people know friend from foe in medieval (and later) battles?

I’d imagine most historical battles were pretty chaotic. And most people fought in very similar clothes (knights in gray steel, foot soldiers in whatever roughspun or armor they just had/found.

How did fighters know friend from foe, avoid killing their own (or even their leader?) in the midst of battle?

Spies in Lisbon during WW2. What about them?

I came across the book Lisbon: War in the Shadows of the City of Light, 1939-1945.

I'm from Portugal, and I don't recall learning anything about this. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to read the book, but I'm still interested in learning more about the topic.

Why were the spies there? I understand why refugees would flee to Lisbon, but I'm not sure why any spies would decide to stay there for more than a couple weeks before moving to more... interesting locations.

What did they do? Did allied and axis spies often come across each other?

Where did they live? Houses of their own, hotels...?

Why did Mozarabic not survive, like Catalan, Galician and Basque?

I know some other languages didn't survive also (like Aragonese) but Mozarabic was relatively different from Spanish, had tons of Arabic loanwords and was spoken in a peripherical region of Iberia. So why?

Dwight D. Eisenhower ended his presidency by warning of the military-industrial complex, yet couped Guatemala for the United Fruit Company, what explains this dissonance?

The Dulle brothers, Secretary of State and CIA director respectively, who convinced Eisenhower to launch his invasion, had both worked with UFC, and along with other government officials, were on UFC payroll, albeit often indirectly. While this is far from the archetypal defense industry collaboration with the armed forces situation, it is still a collaboration between a large company and the armed forces at the detriment of foreigners which arguably continues to this day, with the legacy of the later Civil War. Did Eisenhower or any of his associates ever acknowledge or express regret for this? I understand this is a pretty charged question, but it is confusing, given how famous Eisenhower is for his warning, and how little the average american knows about Guatemala.

Who decides where to end a history textbook?

Thinking about this crazy year got me thinking of what it will look like in our textbooks. How long does a textbook writer wait to write about current events? What is the process? Are there rules of thumb like "shouldn't teach the target audience something they would have remembered happening"? Is something more likely to show up in a textbook in less time because "decades" are published together?

At the time of US independence, the 13 colonies had 2+ million inhabitants, whereas the mother country, Britain, had only 8+ million. How is it possible a colony could grow organically to 25% of home population in such a short time? No other colonial power faced the same power disparity.

Why did many European nations hate Napoleon yet supported the French King Louis XVIII?

Many European nations such as Britain, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Sweden and the Netherlands would go to war with Napoleon, yet were openly supportive of another Frenchman King Louis XVIII replacing him.

Why was Napoleon seen as a threat yet Louis XVIII wasn’t?

Was it because Napoleon was seen as a revolutionary against the monarchies and aristocracy, while Louis XVIII was one of them?

Why did the Iroquois Confederacy side against Metacom in King Philip's war?

I'm an AP US history studentvand the other day we learned about King Philip's/ Metacom's war. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my online class I was unable to ask clarifying questions about this topic.

My history teacher (and textbook) stated that Metacom was winning against the colonists, and was quite close to destroying Boston, but was defeated (or maybe assassinated, I'm not clear on that) by the Mohawk tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy.

Why did the Iroquois side with the colonists over Metacom? I understand that they aren't the same tribe and therefore may not feel particularly inclined to be allies, but siding with the Europeans seems like it could only be a bad idea to a group of Native Americans, given the colonists history of slaughtering and stealing from other tribes.

Follow up question: was Metacom realky that sucessful? My teacher made it sound like he had won the majority of the battles and was close to burning down Boston, but if that were true I think I would have learned about the near defeat of Massachusetts in some other class.

Thanks for any help you can provide to an intrested AP student.

How did American citizens in 1877 react to congress electing a President who lost the popular vote as well as the uncontested electoral votes? Were there widespread conspiracy theories about this?

I’m sorry if this title has any inaccuracies, I know very little about this compromise so far. The first part of this post is my current understanding of what occurred. I’m including it in case I’m not comprehending what happened correctly. My question about these events is in italics below

I was looking up past elections on Wikipedia, and was kind of shocked after seeing what happened in the 1876 election. According to Wikipedia, Democratic candidate Samuel Tilden won the popular vote 50.9% to 47.9%. He also won 184 electoral votes to Rutherford B Hayes’ 164, with 20 remaining electoral votes being contested by both parties. Additionally, one of Hayes’ electoral votes was disqualified. Also, in South Carolina 101% of eligible voters voted and the state was an outlier in the South in its support for Hayes.

Congress reached a compromise, the details of which are somehow still poorly understood, that made the popular and likely electoral vote loser Hayes the president by a margin of one vote.

How exactly did Democrats react to this loss? Were there fears of widespread violence when the civil war had just ended?

I’m also curious to know if there were any conspiracy theories about what occurred in 1877. If this happened in the US today it’s insane to consider what people would come up with. I’m most curious to know what was the prevailing conspiracy theory about how the Democrats lost, but any interesting or weird historical conspiracies would be fun to dive into as well.

Thanks for any help :)

Did Churchill, or any other WW2 leaders, actually have body doubles to confuse the enemy about their location? Did it work?

I recently read a novel where Churchill had a lookalike who was used to pretend he was in one place, while he was actually somewhere else. I also have vague memeories of a film from the 50s about a body double being used for a General during the second world war.

I'm just wondering if body doubles were used, and if so, how successful it was.
