Sorry if this is worded badly, but when you look at maps of Europe throughout the centuries, France was more or less always the same size and had the same amount of land from the get-go, unlike other countries who were able to compete with France only after uniting their region as was the case with Germany or uniting their kingdoms together (i.e Spain and Great Britain)
Why was this the case? How/why was France united into one country from the start, and if not, who were they united by?
All I know was that there was a Frank Empire in the region before France itself, but that's basically it, so the history of France is rather muddy and new to me.

Hello! I am currently working on a thesis paper on how the jewish population (germany in particular) coped with the aftermath of the holocaust and how they rebuilt their traditions and institutions despite oppression of the general public. And if they "choose" to leave europe for good, where did they go and how were they accepted by the people in the places they immigrated to. What were ways for people to resume back to their normal life?

I have done some research into this but if anyone has more input about this topic I would be thrilled to talk to you or if anyone has any family that would be willing to share their story I would be all ears!

From the 1950s to the end of the Cold War there were several major American films depicting, usually through accident or misunderstanding, an unplanned American nuclear strike on the USSR, with Dr Strangelove, Fail Safe, and War Games springing to mind.

Did the Soviet Union ever produce films from the opposite perspective, depicting
rouge Soviet bomber crews violating US airspace or anything along those lines?

Why haven’t historians been able to reach an agreed upon conclusion on the collapse of the nation?

I can’t help but noticed that whenever I were gloves, ether dish gloves or disposable gloves for my chemistry class, I have reduced dexterity and control over the object(s) I will be holding. Would some medieval solders or knights chose not to were gloves for this reason, even though their hands hard unprotected?

Do we have early sources that shed light on the formulation of the concept of kitniyot and why it should be banned alongside chametz during Passover? Was there interesting dialogue between Jewish communities that ban both and those that only ban chametz?

Hello, I plan to become a historian and was wondering what were some good, reasonably priced colleges for a history major

I'm looking for a book that talks about the history and process of italian unification starting from revolutionary france/napoleonic era and ends with the unification of italy.

What were the ranks and social classes of Anglo-Saxon England (starting from say, Æthelstan)? I know the basics like slaves, peasant farmers and serfs, ceorls, thegns, reeves, ealdormen/eorls/earls, and the king of course, but I'm not so sure as to they actually did and the subclasses for thegns confuse me even more.

Apparently an ealdorman had to be appointed and have titles revoked or even be banished unlike hereditary dukes (Tostig and Godwin)? And they only ruled individual shires (not sure what those are analogous to) up until Canute? I really have no idea what the earldoms looked like (at least not before Canute), so a map would be much appreciated.

Are there any surviving copies of medical texts from the middle ages, that are scanned online are ready for a read? It's just my curiosity, in wanting to understand the mind of a "medical doctor" of that time. I'm not really interested in books discussing about that stuff, unless they mention the books they've read that are from those periods, so I can do a quick search and read what has been mentioned. But I generally prefer straight from the source.

I'm planning to make an interactive map about the Maghreb area and it's history as a personal project. I'm starting with Morocco before expanding into other areas of the Maghreb.

But before starting I need to read up and collect credible information sources and not just wikipedia. Are there any books or sites (besides wikipedia) that I can look into? My Arabic (darija) and Amazigh (Tachlhit) isn't that good but books and sites in those languages are still appreciated.

Today I see images of bustling cities, crazy clothes, child-like little animations and characters. It’s a cutesy culture in many ways. Silly stuff like vending machines with weird or unusual products and crazy KitKat flavors. Hello Kitty! Etc... I have a really hard time reconciling that culture with the country of 80ish years ago that tortured POWs beyond most people’s comprehension and easily sent kamikazes and kaiten to destroy aircraft carriers and other ships; that attacked America unprovoked and drowned 2 and a half thousand men in their sleep during Pearl Harbor. That didn’t warn their citizens in Hiroshima and Nagasaki of the coming destruction. It just wasn’t THAT long ago.

Was there some big government change? I don’t remember there being a civil war. What happened that allowed such huge change in such a short period of time? Not that I object to the changes. I much prefer the Japan of this decade. It’s just crazy sounding.

The last Persian Empire to be more specific

I’m watching Band of Brothers (great show btw) and I’ve noticed that even American soldiers seemed to revere German weaponry. Many of these soldiers have an infatuation specifically with the Luger for some reason and German tanks seemed to be considered especially dangerous. Was there truth to this and if so was it just a couple of these technologies or was the German army as a whole better equipped technologically?
