Just watched the King on Netflix, and whilst I'm sure that's ladened with inaccuracies on the fighting that took place within medieval battles, it has made me wonder that in the thick of a melee where all combatants are wearing fairly similar plate armour, how on earth could you tell who you were suppose to be fighting. Surely you could easily end up killing people on your own side by accident?

I've been watching the crown (season 1) and the bit where Margaret can't marry a divorcee. Wasn't the CofE founded by Henry the 8th so he could divorce and remarry? Have I missed something or has the rules changed since then?

I am a university student currently studying history, and I am doing a research project about American pop culture during the early years of the Cold War. I am taking a look at how the politically-fostered culture of exposure and paranoia permeated into American popular culture. A primary source that I would like to use for my research is an early American gossip magazine, Confidential, which will serve as an example of this culture of paranoia and exposure. Even though the magazine was in print until the 1970s, I would like to look at issues from 1952 to 1958, its most successful years.

I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find these issues of Confidential, either physically in a repository or in scans online. I am having trouble finding them through my university’s library services, and I wanted to see if I could find them another way. I know there are some on eBay, but I would prefer not to pay for this if possible. I attend a pretty big university in the US, so I should be able to gain access through interlibrary loan if they’re held at a different institution.

Also, if you are aware of any similar publications or other secondary sources that would be helpful to my research, please let me know! Thanks!

Since it is Halloween weekend and the magical powers of the mods have brought me back to life I have a question; I just watched the new tale of Henry V on a magical netflix window and since I'm mostly a figment of imagination of Billy Shakespear I'm asking other ghosts from 1415 what you thought of it. I was annoyed that it was a bit too simplified (where were my military scouts?) but alas, it only a tale for folks without deep knowledge so I gave them a pass. A true tale would take days to tell and scare the soft bellied youth ;)

This was just a curiosity that occured to me while listening to Sabaton's "Attack of the Dead Men", which is about the battle of Osowiec Fortress, where 7000 Germans, repeatedly unable to eliminate the Russian forces within, deployed mustard gas. However, when the Germans advanced on the fortress, under the belief they killed everyone, it turns out 100 Russians survived the mustard gas, and the surprise of so many surviving defenders whose faces were mangled horribly from the gas caused the 7000 Germans to rout.

This made me wonder, did an experience so horrifying have any effect on George Romero when he introduced the zombie into pop-culture? I don't know of any specific people before Romero who wrote about zombies, hence why I put his name in the text, but if there is a lesser known individual before Romero who created Zombie stories (even if they didn't use the Z-word) that were inspired by the events of Osowiec, I would love to hear about them.

Obviously, the civil war must have thrown most of your plans out the window, but it seems like you must have had some idea of what you were going to do if you got a regular term in office.

So I know that in early British tanks that were equipped with 2 pounder (40mm) guns not having a high explosive round for anti infantry use was considered a huge setback for early British forces. One of the reasons the British liked the Grant tank so much was the high explosive 75mm gun it had. I am curious to why though the original 40mm guns were not provided with it. There were 40mm anti aircraft guns that had HE shells so what prevented the British from designing a similar shell for their tanks.

I looked this up but i can't find a satisfying answer. Considering the enormous tension from cold war and the giant stockpiles of nukes, it could have ended really badly. What was there to gain from Korea that justified risking the end of the world to get it?

He said you used to study it by meditating on a single gua for three days at a time. Was this true? How did you practice this way? Are there writings where you later shared your thoughts about this ancient work? How long would you practice this way (i.e. would you study each gua for three day increments until finishing all 64 and then restart?)?

But I have always wondered what prompted such an intense interest and focus into your study of Buddhism and why you gravitated further and further towards an intensive study of the Tibetan variant?

Was your interest in the Dharma always geared towards the Tibetan variety, or did you also study and have an interest in other forms, i.e. Chinese or otherwise?

At what point/deviation were you the most pissed about? The Belgians resisted and the Russians were staged to mobilize almost immediately. Should either of those issues cause the plan to be scrapped and a more thorough improvisation to happen?

I'm reading through Rick Atkinson's The Day of Battle and he talks about the German air raid on Bari. One thing that isn't clear is why the Allied command kept it hidden from medical personnel and then buried the story for another 15 years. Was it fear of German reprisal should they learn the allies stored several tons of gas ready to use or was allied command ashamed of what happened?

I ask this question after many years of reflection, as I think back on my life as I write its story for my children and their children after them. I myself loved my first husband, Chayim Hameln, a pious and worthy Jew who walked in the paths of the righteous, beloved by all his fellows. We were betrothed when I was twelve years of age and married two years later, as is the age-old custom among the Jews of Germany in our day, and always shall I be grateful to my beloved parents for their fortuitous choice of mate. In our business my good husband always trusted my opinion and was guided by my advice, and together we arranged fortuitous matches for the eldest four of our twelve children.
